This was the third species we saw at that willow thicket. Not a lifer, but only the second time I've seen one so I had to ask ID Forum for help identifying this one.
Warbling Vireo (Vireo gilvus subsp. gilvus) Sexes similar. South Padre Island Convention Center, South Padre Island, Cameron County, Texas, USA. Barrier Island, small coastal woodland adjacent to Laguna Madre at ca. 2 m (6.6 ft) elevation.
Right on time according to my records, these vireos sure don't sit still long and their drab coloring makes it hard to get any decent images in the bright morning sun.
Arrived three days later than last year but I could have mistaken them for the yellow-rumped warblers which are also here. They never come close enough or sit still longer than a second, hence the not-so-good picture.
A couple of these cute little birds arrived two days later than in the past years but I like to think they were on time and I just missed seeing them. They're enjoying the berries on our vines.
Found this early migrator at my local patch, the Vischer's Ferry Nature Preserve. I spend a lot of time here because it is close to home and has trees, ponds, an old portion of the Erie Canal so a few different habitats. It is also the closest spot for migrators for me.
I saw in its well woven nest, a Warbling Vireo a little way from this one; its song was great and reminiscent of a Purple Finch (makes me wonder how many of these guys I have by-passed because of this mistake). After taking this shot I realized that these must be the first two loops of another...
I believe migration has begun again. Seldom see so many species of bird in one place. Spent 3 hours in QE Park.
Got something tonight, so an early "hit and run" for me today.
