Water Rail

Quite a rare bird in Holland. This juvenile was feeding close to a shelter in the Oostvaardersplassen.

Low water levels of freshwater marsh bring water rail and family further out from the reeds.

Just getting to grips with my new setup. Busy cleaning up beneath the feeders.

I'd like to say that I spent ages waiting for this to show... but really it was just dumb luck, I walked into the hide and it walked out in front of me.

Since the dykes at Brightlingsea marsh have been cleared new species are arriving

This rail was chaing a Redshank around and then after it went to cover, it crossed from on bank to the other...when I got it!

My first shot of a Water Rail. Two birds were fighting and then swam back to dense undergrowth. Not around for long.

This bird has been showing very well for a few weeks. Of course, it has also been grey and gloomy every day I have seen it! Managed a few shots today, but shutter speeds were really too slow for this fast moving rail.

This Water Rail made a dash from the reeds on the left to right and was in the open for a few seconds.

The first time I've ever photographed a Water Rail with the sun on it! A nice start to the new year.

The waterrail was alot of fun in the feeding station today. He was in for a long time and i got alot of photos. He made me laugh though because when he went behind the logs he would keep sticking his head over the top to have a look really quickly then disappear again. I had to train my lens on...

Pleased to get this shot this morning at the end of a walk around the lake

got another showy water rail today, though only on view for a minute or so - much better light today, was well pleased with this one.

Now that winter is approaching the water rails are becoming more visible once again. This one came into the feeding station twice in half an hour.

after showing well for a few mins it made a dash for cover.

spent a lot of time trying to get pics of water rail this morning with no luck, then this afternoon this one spent a few mins on show - very pleasing.

Normally skulking & secretive this juvenile Water Rail was feeding on small aquatic snails on the edge of a sedge-fringed pool.

Same bird only now in its more natural area skulking around reeds.
