All puffed up, and no where to go!

This Western Scrub-Jay, from the califonica group, sub species A.c. hypoleuca, was getting all puffed up, I think just to cool down. Our summer heat is starting to get here, and the thermometer showed 106 F yesterday, at 2500 feet. One of the ranch hands said it showed 110 on his wall...

May be things are changing gradually. The Scrub Jay was seldom seen here, but we have one of this bird in Maple Ridge 2 years ago, then another in Terra Nova last year. Now we have a pair in Vancouver. I don't know if they are a couple, if so then we may have young Scrub Jays later too!

    Curious

I particularly like this capture because he looks curious, which suits the Scrub Jay personality. This one was extremely patient and let me take about 100 pictures.

    Western Scrub-Jay

I spend time placing perches in the yard so as to take advantage of where the best light will be at certain times of the day: line of sight for the best back-grounds: access for the birds. In general for a better photograph. While on an outing to get an image of a target bird (canyon wren, to be...

    Western Scrub-Jay

There are times when just sitting and watching these jays is so satisfying. From my kitchen window I have an unobstructed view of the yard and can observe them without being intrusive. Sometimes I forget to even take pictures of them. There are several of them that frequent the yard on a regular...

Another in the series. This one was eyeing a mister system I put in for the birds. It gets hot here. So they love to stand in the mist. So do I.

Nothing special, just one of the many jays that work the yard offerings all day. This one was taking a rest.

Most common Jay found in California. Very aggressive member of the Corvids. Very intellegent, keen curiosity with a wide variety on it's menue. Very vocal.

    Jay in stickers

One of the most common and aggressive local birds, but difficult to photo the white neck feathers in detail. Probably my best result so far, which I attribute to some very favorable lighting this afternoon. Made a nice Thanksgiving, too.

Now this is a front view, a little bit far but the best I could get. I am thinking of buying a better lens (around 500mm) but are a little bit expensive right now, so it will take some more time.

    Jay in Oak

We take this common bird for granted around the city, but look what an attractive animal it is, posed with some good native habitat. This mitigation wetland by the Clackamas Costco is framed by some magnificent tall Oaks. The White Oak is one of our native oaks, and the only native Oak in WA...
