    Then it was my turn....

.... to spot a white blob in a tree! And so glad I did for it turned out to be yet another Lifer in a White-bellied Sea Eagle!! I think Ken lent me his shoulder to take this shot LOL (gave me just the right upward angle!)

The island had a resident pair of Sea Eagles.

    How could I have forgotten

to post this one? This was on our first river excursion. We saw two adult White-bellied Sea Eagles fairly close up. Of the two, this one was closest to the bank as we slowly drifted past.
  8. Youngster

    Youngster

Immature White-bellied Sea Eagle. He was perched on that snag until we came quite close, then took off just as I had him in focus. This was the the good thing about having our river excursions at the end of the trip. Of course I should have somehow squeezed my back-up camera into the luggage...

    Kites vs. Eagle 3

In one pic I skipped for this series, the Eagle swoops a bit lower, perhaps to evade the Kites. But not lower than that he still clears the hills and sails on towards the fire. Those Kites were no more bother to him than a couple of flies or mosquitoes were to us ;) And now I'm off to work. A...

    Kites vs Sea Eagle 2

So the Kite enlisted the help of another Kite. Now there are two Kites harassing the Eagle, but the Eagle has simply made a circle upwards on the thermal and is now headed back towards the hills and the fire beyond.

    Kites vs Sea Eagle 1

OK. Here comes the short version of the Black Kites vs White-bellied Sea Eagle story. Out of 30+ shots, I've picked these three that tell the main plot. The kites were clearly not all that happy to have the Sea Eagle join them on the hunt at the fire. Here we have to wonder - was that Kite...

    Kites and ...

When we got to the beach at Buffalo Creek, we realized why there were so many kites in the air. Once they got high enough in that thermal, they headed across some hills towards the source of the smoke. They had spotted a fire and were headed there to hunt for fleeing small mammals. I've written...

We hadnt realised there's a lot of inappropriate baiting for tourist boats going on in the mangroves of Langkawi; half a dozen or more of these fabulous sea eagles appear out of nowhere. Great sight, but at a cost....

Seen more of this species on this trip than ever before. WE even came across one on a roadkill 500 miles inland in the outback!

Often (buddhism) believers will come to this pond to release big lively fishes as a practice to save life but not knowing that there is this White-Bellied Sea Eagle waiting to dive. In my first month into birding, this gave me great opportunity to understand how this eagle look out for food...
