White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha)

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline (Oakland, CA, USA) at less than 5m. I know I already have photos of this species, but around here, they are one of the more colorful local birds, and I just like all the patterns and contrasts. Besides, they are reasonably people-tolerant...

Taken at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline at about 12m. I've taken photos of these birds before, and they always seem to have an air about them.

Wider view of the White-Crowned Sparrow from this morning. This is the first shot I got and was from a greater distance than the other two. Red leaves are from barberry shrub in front of spruce tree. Did not use a fill flash for this one, so the eye looks more natural.

What was the whitish bird I was seeing in the spruce tree this morning? A White-Crowned Sparrow! Back from Northern Canada to spend the winter. Last time I saw one was during May. Used a fill flash, so the eye looks blue (but I think it becomes him, lol).

Another shot of the White-Crowned Sparrow from this morning, after he flew from the fence to the driveway.

Has been around for the last several days, but must be just visiting because these birds neither winter nor summer here. Probably on its way to Northern Canada for the summer.

I've never been able to get close enough to get a decent shot of this bird but this was my lucky day! He perched right outside my gallery.

One moment the lawn is full of sparrows ... Mostly white-crowned, I think, but the flock was mixed.

This Beautiful helmet-shrike was foraging in a flock of around 6 birds on the grounds of the pretoriuskop camp in the Kruger NP. they were certainly not shy as they hopped around, oblivious to my presence.

This, the Lark and the Rufous-crowned sparrows are amoung my favorites.

Our about-to-depart White-crowned sparrows are molting. At least I hope that's the problem here.

It was cool and gray this morning, but this sparrow clearly was already anticipating springtime.
