White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia rolland subsp. morrisoni) Cordillera Blanca, Huascaran National Park, Carpa Unit, Laguna Patochocha, southeast of Pachacoto, Ancash, Per at ca. 4,100 m elevation. River valley with bogs and puna grassland.
Too bad the light was so murky that day. Too bad this grebe didn't come closer. I've got two shots that were sharp enough that I could crop them a bit, but neither really does justice to this bird's beauty. Oh well. It was a joy to see, and the last of my Argentina lifers. |=)| Nr. 83, I think.

This photo is of one of two parents swimming with their three juvenile offspring at a small, shallow lake near Cliff Point on Saunder's Island, Falkland Islands.
This grebe mostly dive like other grebes, but at one or two occasions, we saw it skim the water almost like a Shoveler. Unfortunately this is not a great image, but the best I got: it will lower its feathers so that the white tuft on the side of the head is almost invisible, and most of the time...
