White-winged Tern

Second Wisconsin record; first in 1873 by "the" Kumlien, (identified by me).

Last week a White-winged Tern dropped in staying for several days. Heavily in moult. It certainly drew the crowds though seldom gave close views.

There are a few nice flight shots of these elegant terns in the database, tho' no perched birds. They are very erratic in the air, but at least this one stayed still.

An immature bird in winter colors. It took me a bit to ID this as they look very similar to Whiskered Terns in winter, the diagnostic is that the black patch behind the eye comes well below the eye in this species. Still not an easy ID to make. I had mistakenly assumed all of the winter tern I...

Scarce migrant in the Netherlands. Here a adult bird in summer plumage.

Finally together with the sun it came:) After one week everyday searching the same area I got rewarded with this nice southerly species.
