Went to the WWT reserve at Caerlaverock looking for Barnacle geese and of course also found Whooper swans. However I was not going to be distracted so I gave the swans half an hour then went in search of my real quest!

Apparently the male Pochards leave the females bringing up the little ones and fly off to England for their winter holiday. The females don't leave until later and so don't have time to fly so far - they mostly over-winter in Spain...
Whilst performing my WeBS count of all the waterbirds at my local patch I was surprised to find this magnificent flock of 20 adults and six juveniles. This is the largest flock I have ever seen. A real bonus for a beautiful sunny day.
