A dream come true! Just yesterday I had placed a suet cake in this feeder that was supposed to be especially for woodpeckers. I had placed it just for her in hopes that she would return, and today she did! Sorry if this is redundant, but it is a slightly different pose, taken in same session...
As I stepped out on the porch this afternoon on my way to the store, there she was! I quietly returned inside to get my camera. This bird is so timid, I made a point to hide behind the porch alcove so she wouldn't notice me. After getting a few shots, I tried to move slowly to the left to get...
Such an unusual looking bird for this area. While she is on the tree, she seems to intimidate the other birds from visiting. I have not seen the male in my backyard this winter, but am hoping he is around. A few months ago, I sighted both on a tree across the road. 27 degrees F, -3C, when I...
She usually visits around 8 am, when it is cold and dim. Here she is this morning on the Mockers tree, the one they have claimed as their own and generally guard against other birds. Im sure the Mockers were nearby, but they were not on the tree. 1/40, F3.7
While I was watching her early this morning, this very shy female Pileated Woodpecker spent most of the time hitching up and down the tree. Here she is feeding from the new homemade peanut butter cake that I had hung out yesterday afternoon. To guard against scaring her away, I had to crouch...
January 17th was a glorious day. All of our snow had melted from the storm of January 6th, the sun was out, and the snowstorm of January 26th had not yet occurred. Somehow, the Mockers were letting other birds feed from their tree. In quick succession there were a Chickadee, a Wren, and a...
Was heartened to see this Red-Bellied Woodpecker on this second tree during the snowfall yesterday. I had been worried about his well-being since the altercation between him and the Mocker on the first tree (the Mockers' tree) a few days ago. One of the birds had pecked the other, causing...
This morning she was not on the Mockers' primary tree, but on the second tree where I had placed an extra feeder a couple of days ago. The second tree, unfortunately, is a little farther away than the primary tree, where I can usually get better photos.
From Saturday afternoon, the 17th. This is the Woodpecker that the Carolina Wren chased away from the feeder. But the Wren spent only a minute or two eating and then left, allowing the Woodpecker to return. In case anyone is interested, the birds love this "Peanut Treat" suet cake...
Haven't yet figured out bird politics or why the Mockingbirds have not been as persistent in chasing other birds from the feeders recently, but I was delighted to see this Mockingbird allowing this Red-Bellied Woodpecker to eat. This, after months of the Mockingbirds hogging the feeder for...
From Saturday the 17th, a little after 12 noon, clear and sunny, but cold. When I spotted this male Red-Bellied Woodpecker approaching the feeder, I slowly made my way, in a crouched position, from the porch to the driveway and sort of "hid" behind the side of my car, resting the...
As I stepped out on the porch today, I spotted a Red-Bellied Woodpecker at the feeder, but the Woodpecker quickly scurried up the tree before I could get this shot. The bird soon flew from the tree. A minute later, what seemed to be the same bird returned to the tree. It was not until I...
From early this morning, the first of three Woodpecker species I saw today on the same tree! Sorry for the poor quality. We had freezing rain last night, and the porch was too icy to set up a tripod. The tripod would not have helped very much, however, because the best exposure under a grey...
This is the tree that the Mockingbirds were guarding intensively for months until they left the premises in early January prior to the snowstorm. Second of three Woodpecker species I saw today -- all on the same tree!
Today was Woodpecker Day! First day in my life I've seen three different species of Woodpeckers in one day -- and all on the same tree! Posting all three photos although the first one this morning did not turn out that great.
Showed up at our feeder for the first time one day ago. (on a cold blustery day) Fed a lot and by the end of the day was chasing all the woodpeckers from the suet. Only a brief visit today.
This Golden-fronted Woodpecker was nine feet from camera.
The camera was on a tripod with remote cable.
Nikon D90, 1/4000 sec. at f / 7.1, ISO 400, 420 mm.
Lens 50-500mm
There was no crop, LR to adjust light and contrast.
All C & C greatly appreciated.
Just trying to improve.
Thanks in...
Yesterday afternoon after the snow had stopped, I happened to step out on the porch and saw this Red-Bellied Woodpecker at the feeder. I quickly ran inside to grab my camera, but, by the time I was outside again, the bird was scurrying up the tree. The wind was gusting and blowing snow into my...
