I saw a tiny bird fly down into the flower beds along the back wall of the Biosciences building. It pretty much disappeared into barely ankle-high foliage, but I could track its progress by watching what leaves or stems of grass that were twitching and eventually I could confirm it was a wren. I love how tiny and well-formed Wrens are, but it makes them tricky to photograph :(

We've been on Anglesey for almost a week but I'm sorry to say that the birding has not been good. The constant high winds make any sort of bird watching/photography almost impossible. This is the best of a bad (small) bunch this morning - it's currently raining again!

This Wren took its turn at the feeder while the Downy Woodpecker waited from a nearby branch (next post). This is most likely one of the pair of Wrens that has been spending cold nights in the old swallow nest on my porch.

After seeing so many birds fighting at the feeders this winter, it was heartening to observe this Downy Woodpecker and Carolina Wren actually taking turns this morning! We had 5 inches of snow yesterday, but today was clear and sunny, melting some of the snow, despite the temperature remaining...
