    This unique Cuban endemic is the sole member of the genus Xiphidiopicus which means "dagger woodpecker" in Greek. Two races are currently recognized. This is the more widespread nominate race. A smaller, paler race is confined to the Isle of Pines.

    Both birds took turn bringing food to each other this one is enjoying a nice grub.

    This bird was not only tolerant but oblivious to the many sunbathers underneath its nest site at the edge of the beach in veredaro cuba. So my integrity is in tact as I need to have a more distant position to achieve the shot.
