    Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea bancrofti) Six subspecies are recognized with only subspecies bancrofti mapped for the West Indies. Photographed in Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge in extreme southwest Puerto Rico, USA. Coastal marsh at ca. 1 m (3.3 ft) elevation.

    This bird stalked little hermit crabs very slowly for over several minutes each before it lunges in on one and eats it whole. I would have liked a less distracting background, but that's where he was hunting.
