1 Day Birding Trip Arusha - Tanzania (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone!

I´m in the early stages of planning a trip to Tanzania/Zanzibar with my family next year. The "main event" will be a 6 days safari (probably including Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Lake Natron, Lake Manyara). This will not be a "bird focused" trip, although I'm asking the safari operators for a somewhat customized itinerary and a guide with good bird knowledge if possible...

That said, I've "negotiated" with my wife a day specifically for birding after the safari while she stays by the pool in Arusha.

The idea would be to maximize the number of new species seen, given that I will have been on a safari for 6 days before and expect to already have seen quite a few.

So I'm asking for help with two things:
  1. Places to visit/ itinerary around Arusha to somehow "complement" my list after a 6 day safari, so possibly some different habitats.
  2. Recommendations regarding a good local guide to help me achieve the goal above.
I've done some early rechearch, both here in the forum and on other sites and places like the "Lark Plains", the forested slopes of Mount Meru, Momella Lakes pop up regularly. But I have no idea what is a reasonable itinerary and what to choose to maximize my chances of new birds after the 6 day safari.

Thanks in advance!

Paulo.

Abdul Al-Habesha is an excellent Arusha guide. Try him on ‭+255 7 1779 8626‬. You could easily spend a whole day in Arusha National Park or the Lark Plains area. They are in opposite directions so probably just pick one. Potential for new birds with either option. If Abdul is not available ask him for a guide recommendation.

Googled "Arusha birding guide" yesterday afternoon, found this post, and had Abdul booked by evening.

Went out with him today to Maasai Steppes (based on my schedule and targets) and had an absolutely wonderful time. Saw 113 species over 5 hours or so and hit about 80% of my targets. Cannot recommend him enough.
