I registered on the website for the "recall", intending to discuss the need to send the camera in. The rep I spoke to seemed fairly keen that it should go in. This whole exercise must be costing Canon a small fortune so there must be some pretty solid foundation behind the need to have the camera checked/fixed. This seems more than just a PR exercise.
