For those that have expressed an interest in the G-f Helleborines in Lincs, I haven't forgotten about you! Checked on them today and they need just a little more time. There are some tall(ish) robust plants, and although individual plants can and do vary, on some the flowers will open hopefully quite widely.

Grahame

Hi Grahame, can you let me know when the GF Hells are in flower at your Lincs Site.
Cheers,
Dave.http://davidearlgray.blogspot.com/

yeah center parcs was where we were heading :) I'll try and go at around that time then thanks. do you know if you have to actually stay at the village or can anyone walk around the forest at whinfell?

I've never tried to visit the centre parcs plants, so I don't know for certain what the access is like, but I've been told they do allow visitors in to see them - I might test it out in a couple of weeks.

Went up to the Ainsdale area today, it’s not been a vintage year there, things are just too dry:

Dune Helleborine – A few frazzled looking spikes flowering in the open dunes, plants in woodland are probably a week off flowering.
Green Helleborine – I only saw small plants, all probably up to 2 weeks off flowering.
Marsh Helleborine, Masses coming into flower, including the albifloras which are perfect at the moment.
Pyramidal – At their peak, some just starting to go over, but very few whites this year, at the spot which has had up to 30 albiflora for the past few seasons I found only 1 small white.
Bee Orchids – low count this year, just a couple of ragged flowers left.
Early Marsh – Still a few good spikes around! All other marsh finished.
Twayblade – Almost all gone over.

Dark Red Helleborine

Another disappointment for me - went to a Derbyshire site today and there was no trace of the Helleborines (at least 12 plants last year). Is it the dry weather, or did the sheep eat them?
As I don't know any more sites it looks like my 'season' is over |:(||=(|.

If it is the site I am thinking of, there are two areas for plants. PM or email me and we can clarify

Saw hundreds of "white" Marsh Helleborines in Warks yesterday morning and noted that good numbers of Broad-leaved Helleborines were still in bud at Cloud Wood LRWT, Leicestershire later in the day.
Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave

What a wonderful sight that is, eh?

The plants are all ochroleuca rather than albiflora; they have pink veins on the inside of the hypochile.

A much prettier version than the standard one in my opinion.

This time next week you'll be able to smell ghost orchids from the car!

Hi,
Any news of the Narrow-lipped Helleborines at Warburg and the nearby Green-flowered Helleborines? Planning to go down on Sunday.

No worries, I went today and there is one mighty specimen in flower :t: (as well as quite a few others).

Hi there, just a note of a couple of Helleborine both very rare in Dorset. There used to be 2 sites near Bovington for Green-flowered, unfortunately now only one, roadside so usually all damaged. These are var vectensis and being self-pollinating don’t usually open their flowers so I was surprised to find this one there this year.
The other that I found yesterday was my first ever for Dorset in the woods north of Sixpenny Handley, a solitary Narrow-lipped Helleborine.

Broad leaved helleborine and Fragrant Orchids

I thought my 'season' was over but got the chance to go and see some Broad Leaved Helleborines today. Not as many plants as last year, and not as strong, only two good specimens really. But an unexpected bonus for me was lots of Fragrant Orchids, they must be a bit later at this location this year, and the whole area smelled heavenly.o:D

If they are flowering this late they could be Marsh Fragrant Orchids which flower later than the other two fragrant orchid species. Upload some photos if you took any, I'd be glad to just check for you ;)

Broad-leaved Helleborine now at their best in South Gloucestershire, several cracking spikes at the Stroud site.

Many thanks to all contributors, I'm already pencilling dates and places into next years diary. Keep up the good work, still Autumn Lady's Tresses to come, does anybody know of good sites in South Glos.

Best wishes to all. Alan
