Surrey update: Common Twayblades are just starting to flower, but many are still entirely in bud. Greater Butterfly are all still in bud. Bird's Nest are mainly in bud, but a few have the first two florets open.

Hi all,

The Sword-leaves Helleborines are looking great at a Hants site. Also plenty of Birds Nest present and White Helleborine still in early stages.

All the best

Lady Orchids

Thanks Dungeness1 (and to the people who pm'd me). I'll be making the trip this weekend and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll let you know how I get on :)

Does anyone know what is out at Knocking Hoe NNR near Hitchin. Does anyone know when would be the best time for Burnt Tip there or at the Hampshire sites?

hi Brian
I've got this new book and it does mention early spider orchids. However it says that it used to grow in the Chilterns and in the Cotswolds but states 'this species has not been seen locally for decades' and 'last seen in the 1970s on the Berkshire downs'. There is no mention of Northamptonshire that I can see nor of any recent records.

Regards
Ian

Doh! Brian is quite right this book *does* state early spider has been refound in Northamptonshire. Not sure how I missed that!

Whilst I remember, the whorls of the White Helleborines in Surrey are up, but only a few have the earliest of buds on them.

Hi Skoyen89,

I didn't have a lot of time, but did a quick walk over to Knocking Hoe last Monday, and couldn't find any. Not sure if this was due to late development as a result of the cold spring, or I just looked in the wrong place. Loads of Pasque Flowers still looking fresh, which I think is unusual for late May, although I'm no expert.

Last June at Barnack there were still quite a few passable Pasques!

Hi All,

Had a great day out in Bucks and Oxon today.

Basically, some Military Orchids are lovely, but some still need a bit of encouragement, so this time next week would be perfect. Also plenty of Fly Orchids out.
In Oxon, the Lady/Monkey Hybrids, Lady and Monkey Orchids are all out so visit in next few days. Surprised to only find 2 Lady Orchids, but great specimens all the same. Also White Helleborines are out here.

All the best

Good evening all,

The Lady's Slipper are still weeks behind at Kilnsey Park, Yorkshire Dales, which is a bit unfortunate given that it was their Wild about Orchids festival this week. It has been widely advertised. There was only one plant in bud which may break over the next couple of days. There was a good display of Early Purple Orchids.

The Southern Marsh Orchids at Titchwell, Norfolk looked good on Tuesday.

I realise the contenious issue of site directions but if any one is feeling up to it could they please advise me of exact directions for Red Helleborine in Gloucestershire, via PM only. I will fully appreciate if no one does as this is my first post!

That does sound late for Pasque flower. I usually look for them in April but this year as we all know is way behind.

Early purples just past their peak in the Burren.

Dense-flowered Orchids at their peak, twayblades just coming into flower as are the fly orchids. Early marsh ssp. cruenta is flowering and there was one narrow-leaved marsh in flower as well.

Beautiful scenery, particularly in the sunshine!

For anyone planning a trip this weekend - had a good look round today

Monkey site - Monkeys fine - will be at best in another week 10 days - lady still showing well and hybrids looking like they are planning to take over the world! Also White Helleborines in flower, twyblades and Pasque flowers still good - saw green hairstreak butterflies
Warburg - Birds nests looking good - white helleborines well behind Monkey site - not even in bud- butterflys in tight bud
Military site - militaries showing well found about a dozen flys -

Super weather

Everything in the south west still seems to be ages behind normal - on my local patch today I found the first 5 Southern Marsh - the equivalent date in 2012 was May 2nd!

Yesterday I found a new site for Southern Marsh locally, an overgrown field half way up a hillside, seemed a rather odd location.

Common Spotted in bud locally.

Just got back from Cheddar. Plenty of Early Purples close to Black Rock looking very impressive with the Cowslips. A few Southern Marsh. Cheddar Pinks just developing buds circa 3 weeks required. Tempted to visit Lizard Orchids on the coast but too early and too many golfers around.

Just got back from a orchid trip of South England. Weather challenging at times for photography.

30 burnt orchid out at a site near Salisbury. Fewer than I had hoped for. Also a few green winged orchids present. I agree with Matt sword leaved helleborines looking fantastic in Hamps with lots of bird's nest orchid and some white helleborines in tight bud.

At monkey site, plenty of monkey orchid in flower, 2 lady orchid and lots of hybrids. One white helleborine in flower on the upper slope.

At the military site, lots in various stages from full flower to bud. 23+ fly orchid on-site and 30+ broad-leaved / narrow lipped helleborines leaves. Common spotted orchid numerous and almost in flower - any day.

Cheers

Anybody got an update on the situation around Arnside, Silverdale area. Hoping to visit the Lady's Slipper (golf course and reintroduction site) next weekend and call in on the nearby Fly and Green-winged Orchids.

This is from the warden at Arneside two days ago "The LSOs are very late, as is everything else this year, and are some three to four weeks behind than in a usual year! However, they are now just coming into flower, and I anticipate there will be many flowers open by next week."
