Can anyone identify these orchids taken today in an ancient meadow in Worcestershire, please?

Please excuse the quality - taken on my old Nokia phone - they are slightly overexposed but I hope someone can see enough to suggest an id.

Thanks,
Roger

Heath Spotted. Based on the spots/dashes on the lip - Common Spotted tends to have loops.

Man Orchid just slightly past their prime in Surrey now.

Regor: I'm voting with Rich M on this one - based on flower shape and lip pattern, I'd say Heath Spotted too.

LizanDave: I tend to think of Greater Butterfly in woodland margins. Lesser Butterfly there also, but can occur in open downland as well. In the downland habitat they tend to be much much smaller.

Locally here in Surrey I'd say the Greater are about a week off opening yet. The spikes should be clearly visible now though; look for the very vigorous and deep green broad leaves with a spike of small white flower buds above.

I meant to mention as a tailpiece to my earlier posting re. our West-country "tour" that we called at the Kendleshire location in the hopes that the Lizards might be beginning to show, but found nothing. Any thoughts, Brian, or others on when they might appear this year?

And can anyone provide an update on the Newmarket lizards?

Thanks.

Martin
You are still a bit early for flowering lizard orchids. It looks like we have an early season so mid June onwards would be good.
I am leading a meeting at Newmarket for the Warwickshire flora group so can let you know what the state of play is with the Lizards there. However I am sure someone else might beat me on this one and visit the site before my meeting.

A couple of unusual ones today, Common Spotted and Southern Marsh with annular markings on the leaves. Probably hybrids of each other but Leopard Marsh has been reported on this site!

Totternhoe Update

Totternhoe Knolls Update from today. Man Orchids in good shape with far more spikes than last year. Something else interesting in a cage but not in bud yet. First Common Spotted's peeking through. Thousands of Twayblades everywhere. Musks and Pyramidal look at least a a few weeks away still.

Greater Butterfly some fully out some still in bud near Newton Abbot, Devon.
Far less in the woodland part of the site compared to last year, more in the open area. Also Birds Nest just starting to go over, much smaller than last year and none at the usual site near Bovey Tracey.

We failed to find Lesser Twayblade above Lake Vyrnwy today, despite the wind and drizzle. Gave up when heavens opened and took wellies off.
Greater Butterlies just in flower, and some in bud, near Llynclys. growing in scrub/light woodland.

Far fewer Birdsnest than usual here in Surrey too. At my usual site probably about 1/10th of usual.

It seems to be a good year for Man Orchids though!

Many thanks, Brian, for these two updates. Much appreciated and we will likewise appreciate an update from you or anyone on both these sites which are a fair way from N.Wales.

I will probably be too late for Ladies and White Hells, but has anybody got any suggestions for Musk and Burnt orchids
Muba- Parkgate Down usually holds good numbers of Musk Orchid, although numbers vary greatly most years. Burnt Tip Orchids have not been reported yet in Kent. It is extremely rare and most years are a blank. I think that June 10 will be too late for Fly, Lady and WH.

Coed Cil-y-Groeslwyd

Plenty of impressive GBOs, with Early Purples (gone or going) and Common Spotted and Common Twayblade (come and coming) at this woodland location near Ruthin. But no sign that we could see of Bird's Nest orchids. Perhaps too early?

Found 12 man orchids in full flower yesterday along with two bee orchids(!), and a rather nice collection of southern marsh which were growing in a dune slack. Was very surprised to see bee orchids in flower in May. I don't usually expect to see them till the second week of June...

Many thanks for that. I saw the Monkeys at Park Gate in 2010, but no Musk Orchids, so a return there seems to be my best bet.
