Just back from a couple of days down in Dorset botanising and mothing with some of the museum staff. The entirety of the botany took place on the sopping wet heaths around Purbeck with yesterday's focus being a full survey of a Bog orchid site. In the end we collectively counted 102 flowering spikes and 7 non-flowerers with many large clumps of the two Drosera (sundew) hybrids - the only place in the world where to two occur together. This is a vast improvement on 2013 when 18 spikes were counted! Not a site I would recommend for seeing Bog orchids partly because of its inaccessibility and partly because the habitat here is easily disturbed.

A good afternoon for
me south of Cheltenham. Muses still going well at two sites but Narrow-lipped are mostly still in bud. Over 50 Birds-nests with seed pods developing nicely too. But best was what seems to be a NLH totally devoid of chlorophyll and entirely pale yellow. Photo to follow

Hi Steve

Very keen to see this. There are old photos (20s/30s) in the museum collection of achlorophyllous leptochila taken in Surrey. A rare find indeed.

I would be keen to get the details of the location when you get a spare moment.

This is the best I can do for the moment. Better photos of the chlorophyll lacking NLH on Monday

That's a good find. They are very intermittent there.

NHM wildlife garden

The Summer Lady's-tresses in the NHM wildlife garden are now in full flower. If anyone is keen to see them, please let me know and I can show them to you.

The self-seeded Broad-leaved Helleborine is now also in flower. Quite a nice lilac colour to it.

It's an interesting looking plant and definitely a rare find. Is it a well known leptochila site? I've not heard of it before.

Mike

I found this site by accident in June and returned hoping they would be in flower giving me a positive ID. No-one else seems to have mentioned or alluded to it as a NLH site

Not one I've heard of before and I'm relatively local. I also have a friend in Cheltenham who goes there frequentlyand hasn't seen them before. It is generally a good Orchid site though, there are Musk, White Helleborine, BLH, Bee plus other common ones there.

Will be checking out the yellow plant tomorrow all being well as I have to be over that way anyway.

I checked the regular NLH sites today and they are still a way off flowering, at least a week away I'd guess. Found a couple of big plants that will be impressive when they do flower.

GFH site in Glos looking very good today, good number of plants and most had open flowers. One in particular had a flower more open than I'd ever seen before in this species. Some impressive BLH's just starting to flower in the same place. Very easy to find. PM me for details
