This site unfortunately has a long tradition of trampling, so be careful where you put your feet and bags, they can be surprisingly hard to see.

I revisited the site Sunday afternoon - I have propped up the bent plant with a stick

Kent yesterday - 54+ Lady Orchids in North Kent and 1000s of Green-Veined Orchids at Marden Meadow

At the separate thread which has been running on this website for some time on just this subject & includes contributors from here.

Yes, this is the project I'm currently working on. There is a separate thread which outlines the idea of the project.

Here's the article I wrote for the NHM citizen science blog (bit more detail) which was posted last week including a very embarrassing photo of me at Hartslock aged 15!!

And the article on the Zooniverse orchid observers blog:

Southern Marsh

Southern Marsh orchids just starting to flower locally today.

And yes I did photograph and upload the image to orchid observers so my life is now complete and full of meaning.

Lady Orchids flowering in mid Kent sites, though plenty of time left to see them. Early Purple everywhere as well, though many beginning to go over now.

Can anyone say when would be best to visit for Military Orchids? It's up North for me in Kent!

Green-winged Orchids

Green-winged Orchids out in force at Trelawnyd near Prestatyn, North Wales. Several hundreds and a nice spectrum of shades. Early Purples looking good too. All were quite short and stunted in the cropped turf.

Kind regards mike

"First Burnt Orchids out at Caburn Bottom East Sussex. A good dozen out, harbingers of plenty more to come."

I saw the later flowering variant last year. Is there any visible difference between early and late flowering Burnt Orchids? It's a very long walk uphill at Mount Caburn!

Will the Lady x Monkey hybrids at Hartslock coincide with the Military Orchids flowering in the same area? I hope to visit both reserves on the same day but its a bit of a trek for me.

Also, is there any parking at Hartslock as my partner isn't good at longer distances walking due to feet injuries, or would I have to park at Goring?

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

The earlier flowering form is said to be shorter and the hood tends to fade more quickly from crimson to white as the flower ages unlike the later flowering form which keeps it's colour for longer (I realise that sounds like a shampoo advert!).
Personally I don't really think the difference is really that obvious at all, certainly not as marked as the guides suggest.

The hybrids flower a little earlier than the Military orchids at Homefield because they are of course half French Lady orchid which makes it even earlier flowering than our native Kent stock. As a result, the hybrids are now in full flower (there was a post this morning by the warden in the British Wildflowers group on Facebook) but should peak in about a week whereas the Militarys are probably only just beginning to open.

If anyone has been over to Homefield, please update when you can.
