2016 - World Yearlist Record Attempt (1 Viewer)

Arjan is now at 6.701:
http://world.observation.org/arjan.php

And some slow progress with just seven additional species on the last day in New Mexico (as Paul predicted were not many possibles left). Nontheless with 35 species in NM he is a little above the prediction for the state!

And apart of Arjans epic run: There is an interesting turning point in the even more epic challenge in ABA region: Olaf Danielsson visited Hawaii in beginning of November in silence and last week for a second time. It was planned by him long before the ABA decided to include Hawaii to their region, just to set a new record for a Big Year in the USA: and that was impressively successful with 824 (+ 3 provisional) species so far in 2016! That could make it easier for Olaf that he will most probably just be second best for the old ABA region in 2016 as the Australian opponent of him is in lead of a few species that he will not get in the remaining days (probably because he missed 1-2 species in the US lower 48 on the first mission to Hawaii!!).

Edit: and here is a link to the latest blog entry of Olaf:

I think from the date of the prediction Florida, Minnesota & New Mexico have added 86 against the prediction of 90. I went for 40 for California but I anticipate both the California and Japan predictions will need revisiting as they depended on some assumptions on what he would have seen to date. Hopefully he will beat both. I'll look tonight.

All the best

So now my prediction has slightly lowered (remembering James' advice) - 6,701 plus 40, 60, 40 & 39 = 6,880. Let it go Andy - it will be a magnificent result!

I guess you're right Paul - much as I wanted him to reach the big 7K I think that ship has sailed now. Still, as you say a magnificent result and I stand in awe of both Arjan and Noah's achievements!

As an aside, based on my own (limited) experience of winter birding in California I think he may do slightly better than 40 you predict before he heads back to Asia.

He's off and running in California, with more than 10 before 9:00 this morning (all on the San Diego County coast) according to Ebird. (I presume he's still traveling with Ethan Kistler.)

Indeed. Excellent start. A few splits in there that were not on my possibles. Are Tundra Swan and Black Brant a bit of Dutch taxonomy creeping in that need to be deleted or are they splits on the taxonomy that Arjan is using?

It looks like the Tundra Swan and Black Brant have been pruned. Still a reasonable number of possibles for California but realistic targets are definitely eroded:-

These are just only "real Dutch species" as somebody wrote in a birding ironic commentary in Limicola some time ago... :) :)

It's amazing that birders with the most progressive and the most conservative lists are actually neighbours, Daniel! I always learnt that the truth is usually somewhere in between. 8-P
(quite a few of the past splits are now widely adopted)

Back to business: Arjan just phoned me during his lunch break. They had 7 possible targets for today (Salton Sea).

This morning alone, he added 9 birds to his list. They now have the opportunity to check an extra area in the afternoon.

.

I always used to joke with the Dutch guys that I met, that they were so liberal, they would count male and female separately!

You are so right, Vincent! And it is quite simple: I am just jealous!!! I would like to count as many species as you , but I was born on the wrong side of the border...
But there is one point where "we" are surprisingly more liberal than you: in Germany we count C species so we have of course the Pheasant on our personal D list! And I added Alexendrine parakeet with great pleasure this autumn to my list :)
