Goes without saying that a high-clearance 4WD is needed!! Saying that, the two birdos we spoke to were actually driving a 4WD Subaru estate....I think it's about 750kms from Cairns to Archer River, again not too bad but rough in places with river crossings to do! We were there in August when it was supposed to be ok weather-wise, but the unseasonal rain did cause problems for everyone. Best times to visit are in the dry months - June to November, then it's inaccessible for the rest of the time due to floods. The GS Parrots are now back around Windmill Creek again so try and get some up-to-date info before you go and good luck if you reach that campsite!!!
