5 more from Mostardas, Brazil (1 Viewer)

George Edwards

Nom de plume
Had enough yet?! Here's another 5 from Mostardas - I warn you, there are a lot of birds down there :) - in the wetlands in the far south of Brazil. My thoughts:

1. Brown and Yellow Marsh Bird
2. Cattle Tyrant
3. White-headed Marsh Tyrant male
4. White-headed Marsh Tyrant?
5. White-headed Marsh Tyrant female

Yesss! Well, I have moved on to the easier ones… Let's see how long my clean run will last. I'll copy coventrybirder's South African thread format and continue in this thread for birds from Mostardas - I guess it's more useful for others consulting later on anyway.

1. Saffron Finch immature
2. Rufous Hornero - nests everywhere but confusingly often occupied by other birds
3. White-browed Blackbird - red doesn't seem to extend far enough down belly.
4. Silver Teal
5. Brazilian Teal (ignore file name!)

I've skipped a few very tricky ones to try and keep a clean slate. Here's the next 5 …

1. Limpkin
2. Large-billed Tern
3. American Kestrel
4. White-rumped Swallow
5. Blue and White Swallow

They were a bit easy, weren't they ;-) I'll skip the Southern Screamer and Roseate Spoonbill then and throw in a few where I genuinely don't have much of a clue… Not at all sure about #1 or #2 …

#1 Misto Yellow Finch
#2 Misto Yellow Finch
#3 Chestnut-capped Blackbird male
#4 Chestnut-capped Blackbird female
#5 Ruby-crowned Tanager

These are a bit trickier. I think you're right except for number 2, which isn't a finch but I'm not sure what it is. It looks a bit like an Icterid of some sort but I don't know which. And then there's the last one, which is a Diademed Tanager.

Very good for the Diademed, as for #2 it looks very much like the female Yellow-hooded Blackbird in van Perlo, but that only lives in Amazonia.

While we mull that one, here's another 5. I have doubts about #1 - maybe Striated ?

#1 Yellow-crowned Night Heron
#2 Yellow-chinned Spinetail
#3 Yellow-browed Tyrant
#4 Field Flicker
#5 Yellow-billed Pintail

I was lucky with the Yellow-browed Tyrant, the book happened to open on the exact page, before I'd even started looking for it! Here's a more difficult lot - can't believe how many near identical Spinetails they have in Brazil …

1. Sooty-fronted Spinetail - no side view I'm afraid
2. Elaenia ?
3. Thrush - Creamy-bellied…?
4.
5. Brown-chested Martin (or Bank Swallow)

PS What about female/immature Chestnut-capped Blackbird for Post 9 #2 - it's a bit lighter than the other one but otherwise basically identical.

Yes, Post 9 #2 is a Chestnut-capped Blackbird. The last post: 1) Olive Spinetail. 2) Southern Beardless Tyrannulet. 3) You're right. 4) Highland Elaenia. 5) You're right on the martin.

Thanks for clearing those up Rasmus. I'm a long way from having any clue about Elaenias, Tyrannulets and Spinetails, so I especially appreciate those IDs from all of you.

Here's the next 5. I've thrown in another "Elaenia/Tyrannulet". The Field Flicker I put in because it has a white throat like the Field but a black (not red) moustache, so I'm guessing a female. #5 I don't seriously expect anyone to get, but if you recognise that yellow spot, it's likely to be a new sighting for me.

#1 Blue Ground Dove (or maybe female Ruddy…)
#2 Green Barred Woodpecker
#3 Field Flicker female
#4 Highland Elaenia (no idea but it kind of looks like the last one)
#5

1. Ruddy Ground Dove, I guess a female
2. Green-barred Woodpecker
3. Field Flicker
4. An Elaenia - could be Highland
5. Tricky! Could be another Field Flicker I suppose

Andrew got 1-3 in last post. 4) Probably Small-billed, but features separating this and the very similar White-crested and Olivaceous are not completely reliable (this is a trio where voice often is the only way you can be 100% certain). 5) Brown-and-yellow Marshbird.

Duly impressed at getting #5! Which part of the bird is the yellow we see - the wing? Also interesting to know about the Small-billed trio for next time. And thanks for the Ruddy Ground Dove, Andrew - that group is surprisingly tricky.

Here's the next five - some which are a bit easier , but I still need to check. The hummer is the most difficult for me.

#1 Tropical Kingbird
#2 White-chinned Sapphire ?
#3 Chimango Caracara - immature?
#4 Black-and-white Monjita
#5 Kingfisher - Ringed?

1. Tropical Kingbird
2. Not sure this is White-chinned Sapphire - maybe Gilded Hummingbird?
3. Chimango Caracara - not sure of the age
4. Is a bird you've previously posted ;)
5. Ringed Kingfisher

4. Is a bird you've previously posted ;)
Of course, the White-headed Marsh Tyrant - Doh!

Here are the next five photos. Pretty certain the last two are the same bird.

#2 Spinetail …! that's about as far as I can go :(
