50D Has Canon Got It Right (1 Viewer)

The Hare piccie looks very nice Rob.

I agree entirely with this comment.

Thanks for that, Although to be fair it was quite close, but as we know they don't hang around very long, and can they run.
This is why I say I like to get out in bad weather, if the sun was shining and lots of people around you rarely see the hares, the shutter speed was only 1/50 sec. I tried to get a couple of shots as he took of, but they were no good, today I will be trying ISO 800 and 1600, that's brave for me, I do try not to go above 400, I want to have a go with my Kenko 1.4 but again Not Enough Light.

The info. is in the exif, I must confess that I have not spent much time doing PP. they are just done quickly in DPP and cropped within DPP, I should have taken more care and run them through CS3.
I thought I might be making a mistake by posting these two.

yeah I was meaning EXIF info - ISO, aperture and shutter speed is always useful when looking at shots. With the 40D I'd happily post or print shots at ISO800 (or lower obviously) without any PPing or NR. I am just curious as to how the noise looks from a 50D on real world shots like yours. BTW I agree with others the hare shot is a cracker.

I was in Anglesey earlier this week, the light was no good for trying out my convertor either. Need to review the photographs i managed to take and I'll post any worthwhile ones, having to work around the house which is delaying things, it was more rerlaxing working!

I know Noise is a big problem with birds and i try to never go above iso 400 with my mk3 or 40d.
im sure the 50d would give a better shot over the 40d and even the mk3 if say each camera was at the same fixed distance from a bird say a dove at 50/75ft with a 400mm lens and shot at 200iso the 50d will have more detail by far .

seriously? I often use ISO800 on a 40D without any noise reduction at all the images are fine for both web and print. With a mk III you should be able to go even higher without a problem.

Not your typical bird but I thought I'd share this 12,800 ISO example (text copied from a post on DPReview)...

I thought I'd try some "real world" shooting and took my 50D and 100-400 out with me this evening when my girlfriend and I took the dog for a walk. This was shot in an unlit country park, on an overcast day, 12 minutes after sunset.

Handheld at 400mm, f/5.6, 1/60, 12,800 ISO, sRaw1. Processed in DPP to 16 bit TIF at 1/3 size and then passed through Neat Image to create the final JPEG file. I used a light handed approach in Neat Image so as not to destroy detail in the eyes and hair. If I had Photoshop installed then I could have applied selective NR and sharpening to achieve a better result.

Sorry mate I meant CanonRob. At least I suppose his name is Rob !

Hi John

Yes it is Rob

I do get to Elmely and Oare quite a lot also lots of other places, its great being 104 years old, no work just lots of clicking.

Below the 3 Hare pics. were done in July with my old 40D and 100 400 L IS Hand held (I don't do tripods) at ISO 800, to me they seem almost as good as the 50D pics. and one of them I printed and it looks stunning.

So what I am trying to say is...I am pleased I bought the 50D but would not be disapointed if I still had the 40D, although I do like the Bells and Whistles on the 50D.

I'm more a photographer than a birder so I'm afraid I don't know what this is, but it looked interesting. Shot with my 50D and 100-400 at 400mm, f/5.6, 1/500, 100 ISO and a bit of PP in Lightroom including a 1/3 stop boost to exposure. Here is the full image, shot in Raw and resized to fit the 800 pixel limit, and also a 100% crop.

Hi, Tim. This is a Kestrel.
I made today also some tests with my 50 D.
The light conditions were not so good.
I shoot every time hand held.
Here are the pics: Nature in Greece.

Watch the birdie...
As a 40D owner I was very interested when I heard canon were bring out a 50D with a 15 megapixel chip all the reviews I have read and posts on this forum suggest that there is not a great difference to the performance or photo quality of the 40D, ISO noise seems to be similar to the 40D. This camera is a bit expensive compared to the 40D a big disapiontment I will wait until I have to replace my 40D before buying the 50D

Agreed.

And it's also worth pointing out that - despite the supposed detail/resolution advantage of the 50D - much (all?) of that could be lost at higher ISOs because the camera applies in-camera NR (at least to jpegs) at all times in order to get useful high ISO shots, which will be at the cost of detail.

I went out for a quick click today with the 50D, it was the worst light that I have been out in so far, I tried to stick to my ISO 400 as tops and I must confess my pics did have more noise than I am used to, the auto focus was superb in A1 Focus and One Shot, it is as if once the light is bad its time to pack up, but the other day the pics. were fine in low light, I don't think I would want to go above ISO 400 in those conditions, it seems like it is magnifying the noise, I have read some where about the lighting optimiser which is in the Menu but I don't know if this should be left on or not, I turned it of from new along with all the other NR bits and bobs, does anyone know if this should be ON or OFF.
Anyway if anyone wants to see a couple of pics from today I will post them, and do heavy crops also, GIVE ME LIGHT or I am indoors for the winter cooking.
