If the only reason to upgrade a Camera was to get a sharper image then you would be right but of course but there are many other enhancements on newer cameras that makes upgrades worth it. Here are a few in no particular order of importance: More frames per second More cropability (via increased MP's) Better menu layout Better built quality (e.g xxxD to xxD) Better high ISO noise performance Live view Highlight tone Priority Ability to turn off Focus search Micro focus adjustment 'C' settings on the Dial AF on Button Better LCD Better AF performance More custom function The list goes on and on I am sure there are many other reasons. In the last couple of years I have upgraded from 350D > 30D > 40D each upgrade has been well worth it as far as I am concerned BUT In my opinion the basic IQ of the image produced is no better than the 350D. I could take just as sharp shots with the 350D as I can with the 40D. I am sure that the 350D plus a good quality Canon L lens will produce better images than, say the 40/50D and a lesser lens. In fact I would go further and say that a good lens with something like the 350D would yield better results than using a crappy lens with a 1 series camera. Most DSLR that have been introduced of the past 3 or 4 years are quite capable of producing top quality images given the photographic know how and a decent lens. For those of you who think that buying the latest Camera is going to solve all your problems and your images will be transformed overnight - the best of luck to you but I fear a lot of people will be disappointed.
