In this usage 'synthetic' seems to refer to artificially grown Fluorite CaF2 crystals as opposed to naturally occuring. This is different to my understanding of the usage of the word 'synthetic' which refers to 'glass' seeded with various compositions (but performing very close to the pure crystal), such as the Ohara FPL53, to which I was referring.
