Very comprehensive report from Tim and I agree with all you say. I'm not going to repeat what you say but would add my experience. I have had a !D MkIII for a while and always been satisfied with it's performance, never had any focus issues and find the multitude of programmable functions great for optimising performance. I recently had the 7D for a short while to compare it's performance with the MkIII to see if it offered anything in extra reach. The trial I did wasn't extensive but it was done in poor light taking shots of geese at about 70yds. Autofocus with both cameras was good and the 7D with it's spot focussing helped pick out birds amonst tall grass better. On my pc I looked closely at image quality hoping that there would be an improvement with the extra resolution and higher crop factor on the 7D. I was disappointed, the images were finer from the MkIII. Didn't really surprise me. Wouldn't expect Canon to produce an interrmediate camera selling at a fraction of the price of the 1D series producing better images. I'm not condemning the 7D by any means, it is a great improvement over the previous xxD cameras particularly with respect to noise at higher iso's and improved autofocussing amongst others. So I'm selling my MkIII and waiting for the MkIV which will have the new autofocus system trialled in the 7D and with improved image quality, I hope!!
