8 Caspian Gulls? from Denmark (1 Viewer)

Are these Caspian Gulls identified correct or have I got the ID wrong in some of them?

I fully acknowledge that some of the important characters are not visible in all the photos, but are some of them definitely wrong for cachinnans?

Some interesting photos there. I wouldn't call no.1 a cachinnans, no.2 also looks odd.

The rest look OK at first glance, I'll come back later when others have had their say.

Hi Kent.

Nr 1. A classic 3cy Caspian, same here: http://www.netfugl.dk/pictures.php?id=showpicture&picture_id=9470

2. Cachinnans

3. Caspian big brute male. Note p10 pattern.

4. Caspian. note p10 pattern. Rather blunt-tipped bill.

5. Caspian. Good broad black band on p5 on this one together with underwin pattern.

6. Caspian. Rather similar to the previous one - same location and date. Note mark on p4 on this one and a differently shaped mark on p5.

7. Caspian. Possible female due to small bill.

8. Could well be a Caspian, but an open wing image would have been nice to see!
Bill shape somewhat Herring like in shape, especially in the second image.

All look good for Caspian Gull, the jizz, plumage characters, bull shapes and leg length and colouration are all good though bird 8 has a rather blunt tipped bill perhaps suggestive of a dark eyed michahellis.

hi kent,

the arhus-gull from december 2005 certainly is interesting. from time to time such ind. with more black in wingtip are obs. and photographed among caspians all over their winter range and at breeding sites in spring even in the black sea, so even in western populations. together with its blunt tipped bill your bird could also be of mixed parentage which could explain the large amount of black also. but there are definitely caspians with such bills and smaller windows among the ponticus breeding population... so on doubt - this is rather a caspian than anything else.
