Our guide arrived about 30 minutes early. He was a raptor expert and considered yesterday's smaller mobbing falcon at Pomorie as a Red-footed Falcon. We first travelled to an Olive-tree Warbler site near Yerusilisovo. En route Woodlark were relatively numerous and 2 Chukar were also trip ticks. Padders were Turtle Dove, Buzzard, 2 Golden Oriole and Woodchat Shrike. At the site, Olive-tree Warbler was immediately heard but was hard work despite constant singing. A few perched views but no photos followed. Also at the site were Hoopoe (heard), Sombre Tit (heard), Green Woodpecker (heard), 8 Bee-eater, Cirl Buntings, Turtle Dove (heard), Woodchat, Woodlark, Black-headed Buntings, Ortolan Bunting, Eastern Orphean Warbler, Red-backed Shrike and 2 Buzzard. One down and two targets for the day to go.... We headed to a Levant Sparrowhawk site but before getting there a male Levant Sparrowhawk gave itself up with a good flight view and then some spiralling. A similar experience to the one I had in 2010. Other birds en route were Black-headed Bunting, 2 Roller, 2 Bee-eater, a pair of Ravens at a nest, Turtle Dove and Red-rumped Swallow. On arrival at the site, an area of poplars alongside a major river, the variety did not disappoint. At least 40 Bee-eater, 5 Roller and 4 Golden Oriole added some colour with other raptors represented by 3 Buzzard, 2 Black Kite, Marsh Harrier, 2 Long-legged Buzzard and a Hobby. Two different single Black Storks flew through with the bushes dripping with 2 Red-backed Shrike, Black-headed Buntings and Marsh Warblers. Turtle Doves were heard as were Penduline Tit and Kingfisher alongside the river as 2 Hawfinch flew over. Just after a Grey Partridge was flushed, we picked up a male Levant Sparrowhawk sitting silently in a bush. When it flew up into the poplars, patience eventually rewarded us with the pair nest-building with one bird flying in with twigs to construct the nest. Two out of three weren't bad so it was Imperial Eagle time. All the best
