For the first time ever, to my knowledge, I had a bird fly into a window at my home. All my windows are screened with the exception of a 3x4 living room window which does have blinds affording some assumed prevention to such an occurrence. Nevertheless, it did happen. But, it wasn’t just any bird….it was a Cooper’s Hawk. I was laying on my couch in the living room one afternoon and there came a tremendous thud as you might imagine from a bird that size. I immediately went to the window and looked out, saw nothing until I looked down and there right under the window on the front porch walkway sat a Cooper’s Hawk looking straight up at the window. I was shocked. We do have them frequent the neighborhood from time to time, especially when the young local birds are taking wing for the first time. I immediately ran and got my camera, came back to the window, and he was still standing there looking up at the window so I began snapping photos. After looking up at the window he began to pace back and forth under the window, continuing to look up from time to time. Then he hopped up on the lower front porch railing in what seemed to be an effort on his part to get a better view. He then hopped from the railing to the adjoining flower bed border and continued to scrutinize his predicament and the window. I thought at any moment he would take wing when all of a sudden he flew up from the flower bed to the upper rail along the front porch right in front of the window. He sat there for some time peering at the window from every angle, again with this look of total puzzlement. Finally he flew up to one of the closer tree limbs and stood for a moment or two before eventually flying off. I was quite amazed at what seemed to be some measure of thought process by the hawk to analyze how he had ended up in his current predicament. I am still not sure what may have caused him to fly into the window. I suspect he may have been pursuing a small bird but who knows?? For what it is worth….just thought I would share the event. I have tried to attach a few of the photos I took in the proper sequence of events….
