Hi John! I've tried most of them and at one time I had ALL of the "alphas"(hate that term, BTW! ;) ) in my possession. I could care less of what "brand" a binocular is as well. What conclusion did I come to? That all of the better binoculars are basically too close to call. ALSO...it so much depends on one's preferences and particulars. The only "alpha" I haven't owned is the Noctovid, which I probably WON'T purchase. I honestly don't believe I would see any optical improvement over what I currently own. Currently, I don't own a binoculars I don't like. I enjoy all of them which is quite a few. I don't always use the most expensive binoculars I have...in fact you'll just as likely see me birding with binoculars much less expensive. This weekend I was in Greene Co, Ohio birding with Ashlee. She normally uses a Trinovid 8X42 which IMO is a lovely birding binocular. She has kinda been hinting at wanting a 10X42. After considering her particulars I came up with a Zeiss Conquest HD 10X42 and got her one for Christmas. This is a MARVELOUS binocular! The Trinovid was quickly left in the vehicle! I honestly don't think I have a 10X42 any better than that Conquest. VERY impressed! And yes...I now have one as well. Truly a first class binocular! I used the same SV 8.5X42 FP as you prefer. It's honestly probably my favorite with the Victory FL 7X42 a VERY close second. Maybe it's 1a and 1b! But I would have been fine with the SF 8X42...or for that matter the Maven 8X42! After this year I could make a good case for a couple of "alpha class" binoculars available for $1000 or less.
