Zeiss Conquest HD 10X42 Chuck .... I think you nailed it! I also picked up a Conquest HD 10X42 as part of the recent Optics Planet sale and Zeiss promotion. It was a beautiful weekend here and I spent most of Saturday and Sunday using the Conquest and checking it out at several local birding areas. There was nothing not to like about it. I did have the longer eye cups on it which made for easy eye placement for me, no blackouts and the full field of view. Many models I have tried or owned have eye cups to short in relation to the eye relief so it is a real plus that Zeiss offers a free optional replacement that is longer. It is optically excellent with a nice wide FOV, has great hand placement for my preferences, and a nice balance. There were no stray light or glare issues. The focus was near smooth and almost no play, with equal tension in each direction. If the Nikon EDG focus is a 10, I give this a 9+. Focus travel is clockwise from close to infinity. I did not notice any CA with my use this weekend, but I almost never notice it. Most of the other lower tier binoculars I have owned have had issues that became bothersome with use. That is not the case for the Conquest 10X42. It may not be Zeiss top tier or alpha, but it is darn close. The SF gives a little brighter image and better edges with the flat lens design, but the differences are not that great. It was a real pleasure using them all day. I think just a few years ago, these would have met the top tier requirements for many. I do wonder how it would compare to the Swaro 10X42 SLC HD. I have considered that to be a top tier entry.
