They are next door to each other, positively close by US standards of distance

Seems logical to go for the ptarmigan now - later in the season the tops are free of snow and areas to search become far more vast.

Are we at the stage yet where we can list all the birds he hasn't yet seen? (Code 1 and 2, in addition to probable code 3s?). Having done so well early on surely there are now going to be periods of inactivity whilst he waits for birds to turn up and be available to chase, along with a few more specific trips for summer migrants.


*(Edit: so just had a look at the blog again where he refers to "4 coded birds" wrt Ruff ie, it's one out of 4 coded birds he'd previously missed rather than being a code 4, so looks like a mistake in the reading ... )

My error! Delete Wood Stork from Code 1 & add Wood Sandpiper to Code 2.

I got my woods confused. I've never been any good identifying trees.

Easy: remember that sandpaper is made from wood stalks.

Wood Sandpiper has to be a code 2 only because of Attu. No way is that easier than Slaty-backed Gull, Ruddy Ground-dove, or Masked Booby.
