Its interesting to note the difference in behaviour between the ABA year-listers - who know they have in-year competitors - and the WP listers who seem to have stopped now (and definitely faltered during the autumn).

Clearly the latter feel less (no?) pressure from potential future WP efforts.

apparently, first ABA record of Tropical Pewee has been reported in Florida. The best was first found in SEPTEMBER, but only I'D this past week as a Tropical, and not a weird Eastern Pewee.

This hasn't been confirmed has it?

As I understand it, there are photos of a Pewee from September that may be a little odd. The birder says he remembers it sounding odd, and 2-3 months later listened to a recording of a Tropical and said it matched. He returned a day or two ago, used playback, and said a bird responded, but never saw, photographed, or audio recorded a bird.

I wouldn't be booking a flight just yet. Certainly interesting, though.

And Dovekie while she's in the neighborhood.

Officially (without provisionals) we now have a four-way tie for 4th place in the Continental ABA: Christian, Yve, Ruben & Victor are all at 752!

And we still have most of a month to go. Christmas bird counts have a good track record of turning up some good rarities, so the game is very much not done yet.

As many as four potentially chaseable Nazca Boobies in San Diego this morning (not sure whether Masked Booby was ruled out for all of them). An extraordinary show. Tough opportunity to turn down.

In San Diego?
;)

On San Diego Bay (CalBirds and the San Diego listserve). At least three of the four adults appeared to be Nazca, according to reports. Surprisingly, there has been no update beyond 1:00 pm. Like ship-assisted, and will hopefully stick around a few days.

The Deans got Ruddy Ground-Dove, which means Gaylee has officially tied John Vanderpoel for 10th-best Big Year ever. She also has two provisionals in the bank.
Yve got Nazca Booby, which keeps her in 4th place, with 753, passing Christian Hagenlocher and in a tie with the Stoll brothers, who got Purple Sandpiper in New Hampshire. Yve has four provisionals in the bank; the Stolls have three. She's now one behind Laura Keene with regards to the New ABA: 814 for Laura and 813 for Yve; 811 for the Stolls.
All five 2017 Big Year birders have cleaned up the Continental Code 1 species for the year! There are three Hawaiian species that were also given Code 1 status: Gray Francolin, Red Junglefowl and Zebra Dove; the Deans won't get those this year.
