Aberrant Hawk moth....? (1 Viewer)

During the Autumn of 2003, I observed in deep shade, a Robin attempting to kill, what was assumed to be a Privet Hawk moth...only one I've ever seen! (large bodied, with crimson and white rings), but with slight marble effect white wings!! Overall white was the dominant colour. I'm aware of moth species being variable to an extent, but this seemed extreme, are Hawk moths prone to aberrance, or is this distinctly unusual?

Cheers

It could be a colour variant of the Convolvulus Hawkmoth. It's too late in the year for Eyed Hawk unless there was a partial emergence of next years insects due to an unusually warm Autumn. A photograph would have been very helpful.

Thanks Harry...You're probably right!....unfortunately, I was not able to procure any decent images, suffice to say, that it didn't look much smaller than the aggressor!

Cheers
