Hi
After been using a Sv406p for almost 4 years and having some problems with it (the eyepiece comig apart , some weird dark spots in the lense...) i decides to upgrade to a betters scope, and after having a few reads on here , i have several options :

SECOND HAND :
-Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 (the old version, the grey and dark green one)---1200€
-Zeiss Diascope T* 85 FL 20-60 ---1400€
-Bushnell Elite 20-60x80 ---800€
-Nikon ED82a with the zoom eyepiece ( i didnt manage to find a good second hand one for now)---- 900€??
And theres the possibility of a Nikon Monarch 82 ed but for now i didnt find a good second hand one------1700€+- (This would be almost too much for the budget I have)

NEW:
-Kite Sp 82 ED--‐-1500€
- Opticron MM4 77 Ga VHD (i think its the newest version) with the SDLv 4 zoom----1250€

Since im not able to test any of these begore buying ,I would like to hear your opinions about these scopes .

Thank you in advanced and best regards

Hi,

if you cannot try before you buy, my would either want an online shop with a no questions asked return policy or maybe get a Nikon off ebay for their track record of being ok or better... not sure if we really had a Nikon lemon here... sure, some were just ok and not very good.

This ED82 with MC2 zoom is from UK and the seller is well regarded here... ebay will do the customs and tax for you which is another 200€ as shown...

This Monarch 82 ED (with the normal 20-60 zoom, not the WA 30-60) from germany is almost too good to be true at the current single and the seller might not be willing to send abroad... (100% positive feedback with many sales of optics). You can either ask him if he might be willing to send it inside EU at cost (he says gemany only but excludes russia... not quite clear what he means...) or send me a PM with your max bid and I'll do a last minute bid with that tomorrow afternoon and send it on to you...

Hi Joachim
That Nikon ED82 a was one that i look , but since its from the UK and i live in Spain , i dont know if there would be any problem of taxes , shipment....and i dont know if for that price that scope is too expensive. Also it seems that the seller doesnt accept returns

My main options were the new Opticron , the Vortex Razor and a possible Nikon ED82a , but i dont how they compare to eachother.
I can buy the new Opticron and the second hand Vortex here in Spain , so in that regard is easier for my , but again , i dont know how they compare with eachother and the rest of the scopes in terms of performance

Hi,

on ebay no returns is kind of the norm... so you can only open a case with ebay if the item is not as described... like arrives broken or obvious stuff like a pair of bins out of collimation despite described as working...

So you would have to rely on Nikons reputation to have delivered ok or better scopes in the past...

You will have to pay tax and customs from UK and ebay will do that for you and just add it on the price along with the postage... that's what the following part means...
Tarifas de importación:
Importe estimado £205.42 Importe confirmado durante el pago y envío

Those numbers are for germany though as I get geolocated to germany and shown the numbers for that... you should get the numbers for spain.

Btw, here is the same scope on the Ace Optics shop... and they mention a 14 days right of withdrawal from the contract for no reasons for EU customers in their terms and conditions... in addition to the 3 month vendor warranty...

In that case you might have to customs yourself or get lucky and nobody cares... as has happened to me on occasion...

Getting a classic Nikon fieldscope without the eyepiece you want is not recommended nowadays as eyepieces are getting a bit rare and you might spend quite a lot of time and money searching for the EP.

LRL, You are already receiving excellent advice here from the erudite forum members and it is difficult to add another option. Perhaps the only exception is the Swarovski ATS80 with one of its zooms. A good sample is bound to give you a very competent and enjoyable service. Good luck.

Thanks to everybody for the advice .
I think that the Nikon Ed82a for the price may be the best option . I wish i can buy a Swaro , but they are a little over my budget . About the Kowa 883 , i wasnt able to find a good second hand one .
I have a few more questions about these subject. How does de Opticron MM4 77mm compare to the Nikon ED82a? . I ask this because i assume that the Nikon doesnt have any type of warranty , as it is an old scope , so im a bit worried that if i have some problems with it , i wont be able to fix it .

Best regards and thank you all

After further deliberation , i think im gonna pass on the Nikon Fieldscope because of the very low FOV with the zoom eyepiece , and try the new MM4 77 ga VHD .
But , today i saw a second hand Meopta Meopro 80HD with a very good price. I saw here some very good reviews on the Meostar s2 , but not as much on this Meopro 80HD . Some people here suggested that its a more military oriented scope , and that it doesnt have the same optical quality as other more bird-oriented pieces.
Has anyone try the Meopro 80HD against a MM4 77 ? I know the possibilities are low , but i would like to know which one may be a better birding scope

Thank you in advanced

The MM4 77 is said to be a crack8ng scope! My only exprrience with Opticron scopes were the ES80ED & HR80 APO & both were great especially the HR80 APO!!

Ok , so after further consideration I think im going with the new mm4 77 vhd with sdlv4 zoom (1269€) , but today a friend said to me that he is selling his old Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 (the old version, the grey and green one) for 1050€ .
Since there is a "big" difference in the diameter of the lens , is the image of the Vortex going to be much brighter ? And in that case , the Vortex is a better option than the Opticron?

Thanks in advanced

Kowa and Vortex provide the best value. My scope is a Pentax 65mm and it uses a standard 1.25" eyepiece which are available from a wide range of manufacturers as it is a size commonly used with telescopes.

A 65mm is as heavy a scope as I care to haul around but I realize that light transmission will not be as good as with a larger scope. If I was using it at my house then I would not care about the weight.

Yeah a bigger objective can let in more light but it comes down to quality of glass too. A top end 65mm would effortlessly beat a poor 85mm. I've never looked through a Vortex but the 3 Opticron 80mm scopes i've had were superb. The new 77mm ones with the SDL v4 are meant to be very good even at full mag.

Greetings . First I have to thank everybody that helped me with all my doubts about the buying of my new scope.
Now im going to explain the process of the 2 scopes i bought until this moment . I have to say that im no expert on optics , so have that in mind .
At first , i bought a second hand gen1 Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 , but it ended up having ¿dust? spots on the inside of the scope , and i had to return it .
Now i just received the new Opticron mm4 ga 77 VHD + SDl v4 , and i have to say im very dissappointed . At low magnifocation its better than my current Sv406p , but when you go up x36 , it seems to have a big loss in optical quality . The image seems to be not sharp and with a cleaf blue tint around objects ( i assum this is CA) .
I share with you two images at 300m +- of the Opticron at the highest magnification (x54) and my old Sv406p at +- x55 . To me the Svbony is clearly better . I know that the Sv406p has a bigger lens , but i did think that for × 3.5 the money the Svbony cost , the Opticron should be better , at least in terms of CA and sharpness.
It is possible that i have a bad sample of the Opticron ?

I see it the other way round. The Opticron is clearly better than the Svbony.

Hi Dipped .In what parameters do you se that the Opticron is better? I saw the image less crisp and with more blue tint to the edges of the objects . To my eyes it only seemed clearly better in low magnifocations ( under 36)
