Have a few days off work using up the last of my allocation so went out for a bitterly cold walk along the river this morning. It was generally absolutely freezing but out at the fields near Asda it was unbelievably cold with a strong icy wind that blew right through you - I was frozen to the bone! A good morning though, I saw a lot of flocks of birds. The Snipe are back, I saw one by the river as I walked across the meadow near home and again near there on the way back. I saw a few Fieldfares and Redwings, nine Goosanders at the millpond, a Little Egret (first one I've seen here since last winter's freeze I think!), lots of Cormorants, Mallards, Moorhens, various gulls and Little Grebes and out at the sewage works there were huge numbers of Pied Wagtails flying around and perching on the metalwork of the filter beds. I also saw a sign of the hard times, a female Sparrowhawk attempting to take a Green Woodpecker, who was calling out in great distress. I could hear it behind a bush at the edge of a field putting up a real fight against the hawk and eventually getting away. I didn't think even a female sprawk would attempt to go for a greenie although I could be wrong. Little Egret Snipe Goosander Redwing Fieldfare Coot Sparrowhawk Green Woodpecker Greater Spotted Woodpecker Carrion Crow Woodpigeon Collared Dove Little Grebe Black-headed Gull Common Gull Herring Gull Mallard Moorhen Cormorant Goldfinch Blue Tit Great Tit Chaffinch Blackbird Robin Magpie Pied Wagtail Pheasant House Sparrow Starling
