But finding most birds indistinguishable from one another? That's like saying all the Chinese look the same or not being able to id Wayne Rooney because there are 9 others wearing the same kit! As I said before, it's just looking and paying attention. Some others on this thread have suggested tagging along with more experienced birders, yeah that's a good idea.
