(Mr. Augustin Diaz, D. E. , Director)

Mexican Duck Anas diazi Ridgway, 1886
Augustin Diaz (1829–1893) was a Mexican explorer, geographer and military engineer. He was Director of the Mexican Geographical and Exploring Commission. A mammal is named after him.

Augustín Díaz (1829-1893) Mexican military engineer, geographer, explorer (?Apolinar Diaz de la Fuente fl. 1859) (Anas).

From https://historiamexicana.colmex.mx/index.php/RHM/article/download/2859/2368/2674 I would say he was born 1830

No bird:

Apolinar Diaz de la Fuente — Wikipédia seems to me completely wrong. But feel free to correct me or add anything of value to this thread.

Maybe somewhat superfluous, but ...

Also note that the Book/Catalogue/Catalog, where the Non-Bird (Volcano Rabbit) Romerolagus diazi FERRARI PÉREZ 1893 appeared for the first time (as "Lepus diazi FERRARI PÉREZ, sp. nov."), is also titled:
Catálogo de los objetos que componen el contingente de la Comisión, precedido de algunas notas sobre su organización y trabajos, alt. Catalogo descriptivo de los objectos remitidos por la Comisión Geografico–Exploradora, de la República Mexicana, á la Expocion Internacional de Chicago ... (1893).

... by
/por el Ingeniero Director Agustín Díaz (Colonel de Estado Mayor Especial, Ex-Professor en el Colegio Militar y en la Escuela Especial de Ingenieros), foreword signed 1st of March 1893 (only a few months prior to his passing).

Just an observation.

Hopefully of some help/use?

It's all in Spanish (and as such ... I'm lost) ;)

Re. the Duck itself ..

This fine new species is respectfully dedicated to Professor Augustin Diaz, C. E., director of the Geographical Exploring Commission of Mexico, under whose intelligent direction the exceedingly beautiful collection, of which the type specimens form part, was formed.

[from here (also in 1886)]

🧩

Hermosillo is not a given name, but a surname. Nestor's father was plain Agustin Hermosillo y Diaz (i.e. Hermosillo and Diaz) (Hermoso is a Spanish nickname meaning handsome)

I have chosen the best of all worlds; Hermosillo y Diaz is the patronym, and Noriega is the matronym.

There is no picture, but it FindAGrave suggests he may be called "Agustín Hermosillo y Díaz" on his grave :

Birth & Christening: 24 June 1828
(Not critically important, but christening: 25 June 1828.
"En veinte y cinco de Junio de mil ochocientos veinte y ocho, [...] bautizé á un niño que nació ayer, [...]")

This contradicts the biography linked by Martin in his first post above, that says that the cartograph was a "hijo primogénito". It might perhaps be better to find hard evidence that "our Agustín Díaz" was not indeed the elder son...?

Indeed: I can find no contemporary account that distinguishes which is "our man": Nestor or Juan Maria

Marriage records of both brothers indicate that the younger Nestor Agustin Hermosillo y Diaz y Noriega was commonly called Agustin Diaz and the youngest Eligio Luis Gonzaga Hermosillo y Diaz y Noriega who was commonly called Luis Diaz.

Here a death registration.

In the city of Xalapa-Enríquez, at 11 AM on 20 Jun 1793, the citizen Marcos Gomez, native of Mexico, single, military engineer, 37 yo, declared that, at 5 PM on the previous day, the Señor Don Agustín Diaz, of same origin as him, military engineer, 65 yo, married to Doña Angela Rodriguez and son of Don Agustín Diaz and Doña Dolores Noriega, had died in this town of broncho-pneumonia.

As things can never be easy, the age he was given here would actually match Juan better. (Not perfectly, though -- Juan would have turned 65 on 24 Jun 1793, thus five days after the reported death.) I assume "Angela Rodriguez" may be accepted as a corruption of M[ari]a de los Ang[eles] Rodriguez, as can be read on Agustín's marriage record ? On this record, Agustín was 26 yo on 12 Mar 1856, which matches Nestor Agustín (born in Feb 1830) perfectly. (The information in a marriage record should in principle be more trustworthy than what is found in a death record.)

Did you find a marriage record for Juan, Paul ? The second scan you posted is the marriage of Luis, born in 1831 -- the third son of the household.
