Thank you John / Mike.....Im reasonable pleased with the results, as ever loads of ideas, just need the time to set it to paper...

C'est pas ma faute, je suis anglais.
working from the real birds has brought out a superb element of movement and life that wasn't as apparent in the one from a photo - and I must say I LOVE your acrylic landscape!

Thanx Nick, sadly only a step by step generic landscape, but a faltering step into the new media....Ive gotten plans for a watercolour / acrylic effort, I wont jinx it just yet, but its all mapped out ready to go...

Sounds like a great workshop, Andrew. Good job on the sketches, even with the charcoal. I chuckled when I heard you reaction to that medium. In my first life drawing class, I had the same feeling - and the instructor started out the first class saying, "Now I know there are some of you here who view charcoal as 'the black sticks of death' but it really is a fun medium." I actually got to enjoy it by the end of the class, although (as with soft pastels, which I can get pretty decent results with) I rarely use it anymore because of the mess. I know a number of folks who think the mess is part of the fun. Not I...!

Have to agree with what John says. Great sketches and it sounds like a great workshop as well. As a true lover of charcoal I don't know what to say, except that I think it also helps to have some compressed charcoal around. The deep rich blacks it gives are just great. I sometimes wonder if you couldn't find charcoal in my bloodstream for all the years I used to work almost exclusively in it.

Somthing Avian at last....

Well, hopefully, this will get finished this time, although I have traced it to do again if everything goes wrong...
Watercolour background with acylics....Im having to slow down and think about the acrylics with this one, as the landscape 'lesson' was dabbed on quite thickly..and Im aiming for a degree of detail and better lines..Still having to learn about 'fading' the colours together
Not sure about the reed going through his head, might have to reposition that one alittle to the right.

Feel free to make comment, bearing in mind my level of learning......

is going to be a really nice piece of work - I agree with moving the reed - the great thing about acrylics is you can change so much.

A good way to make acrylics more fluid is just to dilute them with water Andrew, they really are that versatile, and build up your colour in thinner layers. Another way to blend is to dry the brush off and then use that to mix the two colours on the board so it gives a cleaner blending

Already thought I'd commented here. Agree with Nick (and, of course your own observations) the reed could move - but you could simply lay in loads more background reeds to create a curtain of phrag as they are. S'up to you. Ads offers good advice - as usual. Really nice piece, Andrew - keep this one boiling.

like that greylag very much....and your first acrylic, is very nicely done....re the reed, it's always wise to avoid tangents in a painting, it makes it hard for the eye to read what is in front and what behind, so leads to confusion visually,
some other tangents are say the treetop that is exactly hitting the top line of the mt behind it etc.

workshop sketches look like you were having fun...

Took a day off on friday to go and sketch a particular boat, which was beached up on the shingle bank, undergoing a repaint...sadly, that was last year and the boat had gone..So ended up a quick sketch / colour of the marked remains of another old boat. Sadly it was a grey and featureless day, till I left and headed out for a bluebell wood nearby, when the sun did come out for a few minutes....Sadly the bluebells arn't quite at their best yet...

Another diversion......Off to the Bluebell woods with sketch pad and watercolours...sadly not to much done as we were invaded by Dog Walkers....Its hard to paint whilst a Jack Russell is trying to drink yer water pot....

The final effort was a quick sketch across the meadow, of the village church..
