April 2009 moths (1 Viewer)

my dad built me a new robinson-esque trap yesterday, and on its debut run it's got me my first NFY of the month, a red-green carpet. in fact, that's the first thing i've had in april that wasn't a hebrew character, early grey or clouded drab, and i'm yet to have a single micro in my garden this year.

Lucky, you! (Having a Dad who is good at trap-building!)
I've not had many micros yet. I had a plume moth on the outside of my trap last night but it had disappeared by the time I had picked up a pot.
I also had another diamond-backed moth (second of year). Apart from that it was all the usual suspects:
shoulder stripe
common quaker 2
small quaker 6
powdered quaker 1
Hebrew character 2
early thorn 1
brindled pug 2
lunar marbled brown 1
chestnut 1

(This was with the 25W actinic till c 11 p.m.)

Hi all,

A good Easter break for moths at my site in North Kent started with a Mega in the form of a White-marked a rare beastie in Kent, one in 1999 at Lydd then you have to back a century for the next one! Well chuffed. Last night a Silver Y and a Dark Sword-grass, presumably all immigrants. Let's hope it continues.:t:

Good mothing all,

Barry.

First ever night trapping in my Peterborough garden, thanks to a generous donation of 2 traps from a m8
Weather overcast with some spitting drizzle in early hours, left MV trap running all night.

Hebrew Character 6
Early Grey 3
Muslin Moth 1 - really nice beast
Common Quaker 7
Clouded Drab 2
Red-green Carpet 1
Moth sp 3 - poss drabs, may post a pic if anyone might be able to help!

All very new to this so a steep learning curve...

I won't bother with a full list as I think it will get tiresome to read. But new for year were:
Oak nycteoline
waved umber
lime hawk
hexadactyla (20 plumed moth)
Also a carpet that I think might be mottled grey (which would be a first if confirmed).
I also had a lunar marbled brown that doesn't seem to have any 'lunar' marks!

You're probably right, Brian. It was on the small size (wing length c 16mm - I've posted another photo to try and indicate its size) but well within the range.
I just heard from my CR that I had a Haplotinea insectella in July last year - a first modern record for Surrey.

3 x Early Grey

A clear and cold night did not give the high numbers in the trap tonight, pretty much the same species as before- but only a few of each. One species was new for the year:

Pale pinion- Lithophane socia 2
