I'm convinced this is an Arctic Redpoll - taken on the west coast of Ireland on 13 April - but would welcome confirmation or any further information; thanks

This looks like a good candidate! White rump apart...the very ''faint'' streaking to the flanks is also a good feature and the general lack of warmth on the upperparts supports. Having had Redpolls (of various sizes and cosmetics) on my feeders for the last (and still) 4 months, It certainly looks very different to them. I'd tentatively support it as a probable.

cheers

I think that picture of the presumed artic redpoll is superb the clarity of the wooden gate and lichen growth on the wood and light what a difference digital photography has made to the photographic world.

The photo was taken on a tiny peninsula which I think was called dog bay just south east of murvey in Connemara - beautiful part of the world...

Many thanks for the compliment - I think the Canon 400 lens had something to do with it as well!

Hi Pete

Have you any more shots of this bird? I live about 15 minutes away from that spot and and have passed it twice in the last week or so - gringe! Can I asked what your surname is just for the record?

Hi Dermot
sorry for delay in replying. I have 7 photos in all from 2 different places. Just as it was starting to rain the bird flew in front of me and settled on a wire fence and then flew off only to return two minutes later as I had walked on and settled onto a wooden gate. My surname is Gilbert. Hope to be back in September. Can send/post more of the photos?

Pete

Well done Pete, I think its only about the 4th or 5th Irish record!

Thanks for that. It's a first for Co Galway I'm told; I hadn't realised quite how lucky I was, especially as the bird spent a while posing rather than just being a fleeting glimpse!
