Great that you got along with Astromaster! I purposely avoided EQ mounts for my first scope because I thought they would be complicated to use (and I might loose interest quickly). Also, there is a problem with getting high enough elevation on most commercial EQ mounts, as I am on approximately 69 degrees northern latitude. No problems with dark skies though! ;) Long story short, I went for a manually operated 8" GSO Dob which I have been very satisfied with! :t:

If the sky here was what it was 10 years ago I would have probably ended up with a 6" Dob. And I still may end up with one, the astromaster is really not as bad as I was lead to believe. It works pretty well for me, but I feel the tripod is undersized. I will probably use the same tripod with an Ed refractor in the next few years.

And if I were buying again, I dont think I would buy the EQ mount either.

Even a Monarch 3 or 5 is a huge step up from the crap some people are using, like cheap supermarket roofs with plastic lenses and non-name brand 70s era porros...

I sold my Opticron Oregon 8x32 to a friend of mine who was using one of those cheap supermarket roofs, and it really opened her eyes!

I agree with you there, my Leupold Yosemites are head and shoulders above some I have seen in birdwatchers hands.

Hello High North,

You are up rather late: 1 AM. I suspect that you are having trouble with dark skies, this time of the year, only twilight is my guess.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur :hi:

Trouble with bright skies actually, and ingesting too much caffeine! ;)

I will probably get an ED (possibly APO) refractor as well, most likely around 80mm objective. This would be good for traveling and "grab and go". There are some objects that are difficult to observe at my latitude, like Saturn for example.

I'd like to move west, people are getting a little too plentiful around here.

Spent a few nights camping at city of rocks a couple years back. I think I could handle the night sky there. Photo is with a point and shoot Canon S90, but you get the idea.

Perterra.... Do you happen to remember remember the S90 settings for the star shot? I might try it tonight if the overcast clears. I am camped out at 9200 ft. in eastern Az. Talk about a dark sky! I did a little viewing last night with a Ziess Terra 10X42. What a view!

Bruce, I had to go back and find the photo. Shot on manual settings, manual focus to infinity, 15 seconds at 2.0 aperture with an ISO setting of 800. If I recall I set the camera on the hood of my truck, leaned it back against the windshield, set the timer for a 10 second delay, tripped the shutter and left it. I took a dozen or so photos that night playing around.

Thanks Perterra. That is just what I wanted to know. Those are nice photos.

So far the weather is not looking good but it may be breaking up.

Looking for something I could stick in the camper. I ended up with an inexpensive Celestron Astromaster 114EQ and 2 new eye pieces. Is it perfect, heck no. But I learned enough playing with it to know the direction I want to go in the future. Probably a short tube refractor. I like the dobs, but since the city I live in has gone nuts with street lights I cant see much at home and the dobs just take up too much room and weigh too much for travel.
Have you or will you be watching the meteorites this Week That annually show this time every year, I saw two last night about ten Minutes Apart both comeing from the same direction, either tonight or tommorow is Supposed to be the best nights to see them, on monday night I thought I would Just take a peek and see what was a about well I could not id any Meteorites, but the strangest occurance I have ever seen in the night sky I witnessed around 10:40pm or just after, the sky was patchy with cloud but Clear enough to see large areas of clear Night sky, I was about to come in doors when to my right handside I,d be Faceing s-s-w useing a compass when I first saw this object it travelled in a Straight line presumably from the west from behind where I live and to Look It at first looked like a bright star but hugh and there were no flashing or Warning lights no sound of engines/motor etc and the light from this Object Lost its Intensity as it slowly travelled to me not that high in the sky to me Like something floating but it was definately not something I had recognised before, and this is the part I wish someone else had seen at the same time Was how it vanished, it had either climbed or the size of this object and the Light comeing from it had decreased by about 85/90% perhaps in 30/50 odd Seconds I saw it in the sky it had just cleared some cloud and was above it When the most extraordinary thing happened the best way of explaining it Would be like when putting a writeing object such as a pen or pencil to Paper And doing a quick sqiggle on the paper at the end of that sqiggle it just Vanished I wish someone else may have seen it of course no video proof but I knew what I saw and it was,nt Imagination I wish yourself and others had Witnessed it.

Eyup Coalie

I'm just up t'road in Sheffield :king:

Sounds like you are developing your own approach to birding and nature observation. That is definitely the best way to go, so enjoy in good health!

I probably wont be looking at the meteorite showers. Too much light pollution. Those little mysteries are always cool

Great skies you have there Perterra! If I were living in the deserts of Arizona, I would be really tempted to get a 36" dob or something! :t: Here in Norway, the atmosphere is so unstable that getting anything above 8" is normally a waste...

Those skies were about 10 hours west of me unfortunately. Every now and then I can get a good view from my yard, but usually the glow from park lights kill it.

I dont think they care, the ones I know are raising kids in team sports and paying ridiculous house payments. A Nikon Monarch 3 or 5 is perfectly usable for most people.

As you probably recall, I work in wildlife/natural resources/ornithology, and this is very true of most of my colleagues. The occasional SV or yesteryear's alpha (e.g. Zeiss Victory, Leica Trinovid, Nikon Premier) shows up, but most of us are too poor to afford much better.
