I have been lucky enough to have had a pretty good birding year. It has been tempered by some horrendous lows. The total collapse of the sea bird colonies sadly spring to mind. However we had two Hen harriers nest close to the house and watching a mother teach two youngsters to pounce on prey in the front garden takes a bit of beating. The River Warbler that appeared in Evie was a total delight. The one really outstanding event for me though was getting invited to go along and assist with a night of Storm Petrel ringing. Just sitting the birds in the palm of the hand whilst they filled their wings with wind, raised them selfs up on tiptoes and gently fluttered away into the dark was something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Breathtaking.
