The year began well for me with a trip to Northern Ireland and having been told by the locals that I would be unlikely to find Bewick's Swans I was chuffed to find them with Mute and Whooper at Oxford Island. That same month I found Firecrest on my patch. Quite a rarity in these parts, especially 10 minutes walk away from my house! The 16 Black Grouse that flew a short way ahead of me in April at Teesdale. June saw me in Hungary and the highlights there were a family of Ural Owls in the Bukk Hills and a walk in the evening sun over the Hortobagy puszta and finding displying Aquatic Warblers amongst other special birds. A fantasic evening all round and up there in my top 10 nature adventures (ever). Watching 4 Short Eared Owls as I ate my lunch on Lindisfarne in October was pretty good too. I have had some good sigtings of SEOs, but this one was the best. Hume's Leaf Warbler was a goodun too and even had me twitching at St Mary's Island in November. Bird of the year will I think go to the Bittern I have just seen today at Cresswell Pool. A great local sighting with the added reward of seeing my mate get so excited on finding what for him was a lifer. It had proven well worth his while taking a sicky from work. Him being a very honest guy, Sods law ensured he was in fact 'sick'. I'm just hoping the cold east coast air managed to kill any of his flu germs before they reached me!
