At about 1700m. French alps
Phone photo as it disappeared quickly. Was with birdforum own Richard Prior and he felt asp was more likely. Inaturalist says asp. ObsIdentify Adder (northern viper).

It looks Melanestic to me which is making photo comparison difficult but to have some head patterning.

Is structure visible to anyone who knows more than me
