Satellite light pollution making astrophotography increasingly difficult .... even from dark sky reserves

Chosun :gh:

Astrophotographers like myself do have a few tricks up our sleeves.

First, the Starlink satellites are worst during dusk and dawn, but the portion of the night between the times of astronomical twilight (-18° solar altitude) will have much less of them and they'll be confined to the part of the sky towards the celestial poles.

Second, there are various processing techniques that will filter out the streaks, namely sigma kappa stacking. Almost all astrophotographers shun the use of really long exposures and instead do a composite of shorter sub-exposures ("subs", for short) that are stacked to make a final image.

Lastly, Starlink is working on a "sun visor" for their satellites which, if it works as designed, will DRAMATICALLY reduce their brightness.
