at last got to see a (well lots this time) male bearded reedling, and on top of that had the chance to get a decent shot. :)

Siskins

Siskins in a Sunflower field a few minutes walk from the office. From the look of it there are probably thousands of them, yet skittish. It took me a while to figure out they are not feeding on the Sunflower seeds, they seem to prefer the thistle seeds.

Carlos,
Nice shot. They are so comical. We have only seen then once and they didn't stay around long enough to really get anything very good.
This is the best I could do...

Actually I was stupid. From a distance with my crappy eyes I thought they were sparrows. That cost me a couple of minutes.:-C

Tord,
Also nice! Love the last one.
We had a Siskin that had palled up with a Greenfinch this spring. They would show up together to eat sunflower seeds, that is, the Greenie would break them open and eat most, and the Siskin would pick up the little pieces. We saw them together many times. Mutt and Jeff we called them.;)
Goldfinches also seem to love thistle seeds. They are even called Distelfink in German.

nice siskin series, Tord. :)

Daniel, yes, they are really comical - specially when they walk on boardwalk and such, they look like eggs with feathers :)

Today was a great day. While driving on a major road through a raptor dense area I spotted not one, but three(!) hovering at moderate height, engaging in playful behavior and doing all sorts of funny things. I managed to make a almost legal U-turn, drove back, parked the car on top of a hill, safe away from traffic and deployed the TS102. Unfortunately they had moved further down the wind but one of them turned around and made three of four placid circles at maybe 100 meters from me, clearly inspecting me. A quite remarkable encounter consirering how rare they are (there is a handful of nesting sites within 100km from my place, all at non-disclosed locations). Shame I didn't get pictures of them having fun, but still...

Wow! Hats off! Where did you spot them? Any place we know?
We drove by that place at your last visit. Road 102, about 6 km north from Skurup. I mentioned it's a good spot for raptors, though we did not stop. I was driving north with sun in the back and could clearly identify the eagles on the feathering patterns.

Ah, not the place where we saw the Red Kites after we left Näsbyholm lake, right?
Correct. This is the place: https://www.google.se/maps/place/55°32'10.2"N+13°31'01.5"E

On a side note - I was on a motorcycle ride on Saturday (i.e. no camera/scope) and had the opportunity studying Red Kites hunting for voles and mice as meadows were mowed. It was like last year, but better. The hilly landscape was offering eye level perspective, action was even closer as the meadows were quite small. It would have been some amazing shots as close as 10 meters. :t:

Iv read this thread with interest as i have a Helios 80 scope and a 2x Barlow lens awaiting delivery of a T2 mount. I want to mainly do astro work on my russian tal 100 refractor but like the idea of connecting to my Helios 80 and trying terrestrial too?

Yes, I remember it. Street view is wonderful!
What, you mean you don't take your big momma TS102 on rides?
Not the TS102, but I have brought the TLAPO804 at occasions where I don't have to leave the MC unattended (which was not the case last Sat).

That is one thing I love about the Canon-E-M1 combination; easy to carry in a small back pack, and still a fair bit of reach. I have carried by scope, tripod, stool, water bottle, sandwiches.... the works, in a 70 liter backpack on my racing bike a few times, 11 kg all together. Talk about awkward! The Canon 400+E-M1 and small backpack is just over 2 kg.... without the sandwiches.

"A lot of the samples I see in the astroscoping gallery are fairly poor IMHO but if the poster is happy with them that that is all that matters I guess."
...

I am rather happy with these ones. Don't know what caused the disturbing background on the last one, some unlucky combination of distance and F/number? It was really windy too, which cannot be seen as the small pond is sheltered.

I had to work hard for these and put the setup at risk. Had to wipe off some mud after the session...
