and so they have arrived from up north.

One cropped square, other two uncropped. iso 1600 (1/160s and 1/250s) Oly em-5 + celestron 80ed.
Great pictures, the OMD-E5 seems to deliver high quality even at such high ISO.

May I ask if the last picture was cropped intentionally?

Yes. I sometimes like to zoom in portrait-like. I know I've cut a part of the bird this way.

1. I don't mind the background at all.
2. I don't think they need more contrast otherwise they will start to look overcooked. At the most a little fill in on the ones indirectly lit.
3. We all know about windows! Still, if the glass is good and if they are clean you can get good shots. You can always open them (and freeze) but then, maybe the birds wouldn't come.
4. Don't underestimate what your Megrez can do! The nice thing about using scopes like this is you don't have to worry about field flatteners and the minute amounts of CA you can get with an ED doublet. Stars may be something else. And even the best glass isn't going to be able to cut through 20 or 30 meters of nice warm summer air.;)

Not much going on over at out Kingfisher pond, (actually an old arm of the Danube). We did see one, but he was too far away. Sat for a long time in one place. The fishing doesn't seem to be all that good now.
We have been watching these guys grow all year. They looked nice in the low, fall light.

First : nice shoots DanC. The swan especially!

You're right with the Megrez. It's a nice, light weight and very practical scope (and very affordable : 380€ new in 2008 -now it's more expensive). I own it since 5 years for watching stella and nature and i can push it over X140 on planets (with good atmospherics conditions...). CA are very well corrected with erecting prism (but less corrected with a diagonal mirror).
The sweet spot is nice with sharp details in the center. The edge are so-so without field flat. In day time for photographics' use, i can see the limit : i have to ehanced the contrast and decrease a little the blue value. I suppose that a triplet (like the TS APO 80mm/480 that Fernando own) should be better for color correction in day time use.
I want now to try the Megrez with a manual TC (x2). Anybody can recommend me ?

Here is a few more shots - only Mallard I am afraid but all good practice.
Both shots with Canon 40D + 1.4x tc + SW80ED =840mm (that's 1344mm on the 40D). First shot is ISO 800 and second one is ISO 640.
Its a pity I could not get the eye of the drake bird in the second shot!

:t: Nice light and a lot of détails with TC ! Is-it the Canon extender or the Sigma APO ?

Both good, Roy. Second one looks a bit dark here. Good detail!
Thanks Dan, I like the second one best because of the dark background, the levels are right for the highlights although it would be very easy to lift the shadows if I wanted.

This is with a Canon 1.4x MkII - If I were buying a new 1.4xtc I would probably get a Kenko Pro DGX, its a lot cheaper than the Canon and almost as good.

They are very good from that distance Dan :t:

Whooper Swans are not common on my patch so I got this record shot in the week. It was taken from around 150 metres and in poor light so in the circumstances not too bad.
40D + SW80ED + 1.4x tc 1/100 sec - ISO 800 - 1344mm FOV
