August 2009 moths (1 Viewer)

Another rather dull catch, mostly underwings and setaceous HC
I did get my second Old Lady, which was even tattier than the first last week. One big tear in a wing suggests bat damage?

We were pretty lucky Nerine i just happened to glance at the tree and noticed something raised slightly away from the trunk and nearly did a dance of delight when i saw what it was!

Very little of note last night and the catch comprised of mainly LYU,Straw dot and Epiphyas postvittana a nice looking Acleris forsskaleana and a Lesser swallow prominent were the only ones of any note.

A mild, still night after a hot and sunny day - I ran both the actinic and MV. A large catch with over 70 species.

New for my garden:
Peach Blossom
Archer's Dart

NFY:
Yellow-barred Brindle
Pretty Chalk Carpet
The Magpie
Orange Swift

Eighteen Jersey Tigers in and around the MV and two in the actinic.
The only species in the actinic not caught in the MV was Orange Swift and Crescent Dart.

I don't think I will get any decent photos with F6 blowing. What a difference to yesterday!

edit: Just managed these three: edit: plus Blood-vein with an interesting, wide, red cross line.

Nerine

Shame there was no cloud last night, but I got yet another record catch of Large Y Underwing, 31 in my heath trap. The only other unusual things were my second Turnip and Maiden's Blush, and my first Flounced Rustic.

Despite a mainly clear night it was warm enough for a reasonable catch last night...
NFY Angle Shades (normally have caught plenty by now)
Six-striped Rustic
Square-spot Rustic
Also interesting were my first Uncertain for ages and yet another two Gold Spots.

Mark, it is often possible to check the underwing colour by gently teasing the forewing out of position using an artist's brush. The straw colour is quite attractive. Having said that, the only one I've had recently just wouldn't cooperate!

August so far has been bad for mothing with cold weather, rain and much wind. But 2 days ago I caught a Clifden Nopareil! o:) Never seen that one before and guess what, yesterday I got two more!

The fist one I saw an hour before it actually got in the trap and it just circled around the trees and I thought i was a Apollo butterfly or something :p

(not the best camera and they refused to sit still for more than 2 sec.)

First two are the same moth.

Thats a stunning Clifden Nonpareil Oleander and a fantastic beast to get in your trap.My only experience of them was in Poland, one under the eaves of a hotel in Nowy Dwor and the other on a fence post near the Vistula river....brings back memories!.Well done on capturing a magnificent moth :t:

Bah humbug
Another most excellent moth!!! ;)

(English name - Clifden Nonpareil though I believe - wonder how that got it's name? ....Clifden appearing to be a town in Ireland, and 'Nonpareil' being the french for 'without equal'....?? Only one I've seen was in France on the side of the house one morning)

13 species for the Swanley garden, Straw Underwings commonest again with 7 individuals.

Congratulations too You too Oleander, absolutely fantastic!

And Nerine, Your Archer's Dart is also quite a good looking moth- it's markings is just pure art, no need for lots of bright colours.

It is slowing down a bit here now, but the last nights have been quite good again with higher temperatures. A few highlights:

Double-striped Pug 1 (NEW)
Dysstroma latefasciata 3 (NEW)
Small Chocolate-tip 1

Also daily some Great Brocades, Angle-striped Sallow, Scarce Brindle and The Cameo.

People are catching some fantastic moths, and here's me stuck with all these underwings and setaceous hebrew characters...

This Acleris cristana was my 4th this year, and they've all been completely different.

Thats a stunning moth Jonathan.

The worst session of the year so far but no surprises really as the temperature felt more like November than August!.A paltry 29 moths in 16 species when i checked the trap and decided to call it quits but the one bright spot was an NFY in Acleris aspersana

Dave.
