Spent most of the day out at Mapperley reservoir today and found a stunning Red underwing resting on the side of the bird hide and managed to trap it and get a couple of images.

Yet another clear night last night (when will the cloud return?), but I still got some nice Lesser Swallow and Pebble Prominents. Also my second Common Marbled Carpet and my first Straw Dot.

Your Archer's Dart is also quite a good looking moth- it's markings is just pure art, no need for lots of bright colours.

Hi Svein

I seem to trap a lot of darts and I find them difficult to id sometimes, especially the worn specimens. This one was so much paler than other darts at first glance but it was very well marked, and as you say, no bright colours, subtle shades but still beautiful. We don't get many Archer's Darts over here so I was pretty excited when I saw it.

....... your photos are always great to see and it's so interesting to see the species you catch.

I spent some time on a local bit of downland trying to photograph butterflies. I didn't have much success (not helped by a strong breeze) but I did at least get a recognisable shot of a small heath.
I found a Setaceous Hebrew character among the short sward.
There were lots of blues but as far as I can tell so far they were all common.
Ken

PS I just got some determinations back from my CR (photos not bodies!). Although he isn't 100% he thinks that one of my 'green pugs' from June was probably a sloe pug. I'm about due for one of them but he won't accept them without a specimen.

Finally, numbers were up, but still mostly of underwings!

Angle Shades 6 is the most I've had in one night
Maiden's Blush - first for a few weeks

Also lots of micros so plenty to keep me occupied after work!

A good catch last night produced two new for the garden:
Pinion-streaked Snout
Rosy Rustic

Two nfy:
Old Lady
Frosted Orange

Not the best of photographs but here are some including Pyrausta despicata which was another new for the garden.

Yet another pretty cold night last night, and numbers were fairly poor (just 20 Large Y Underwings for instance!), but I still got two which are completely new to me, never mind the garden. These were Mouse Moth and Hedge Rustic (a confirmation of these IDs would be good). Also my second Old Lady, actually in the trap!

I possibly had a third new one, but I can't put a name to it, can anyone help? The closest I came in the book were Clouded Brindle and Rustic Shoulder-knot, but neither seem quite right.

Try Flounced Rustic.

My recent trappings have been unremarkable. A few Silver Ys the only migrants, second gen Poplar Hawk. Best catch was an Eyed Ladybird the night before last.

That did cross my mind initially, but I dismissed it.

The main feature that was puzzling me was the dark mark going through the oval, that I could not find on any illustration. But having a closer look at Flounced Rustic, the second illustration in townsend and waring seems to show a suggestion of that mark.

Thanks Brian.

I had the 2nd and 3rd Red Underwing of the year last night, both sat deep in the trap, giving me a start amongst the underwing crowds.

Most notable last night was a pretty Phaulernis fulviguttella. There are only 6 county records and the last seems to be from 1942 - I'll have to check this with the CR as it is allegedly a common moth in the country as a whole. The larvae feed on angelica which is very common in our garden.

I must admit that my first thought on seeing Sean's rustic was feathered gothic. The pale longitudinal lines are reminiscent of FG. I see that they are closely related.
I put an outside light on last night and had two FGs (NFY) as well as brimstone, straw dot, square-spot rustic.

Bah humbug
Not at a trap but saw a Lesser Swallow Prominent on the outside of the glass roof at Cullompton Services yesterday evening (and it wasn't even dark yet)..

Some from last Friday night in Wyre. Clear skies and the prevailing wind meant that it became quite chilly after sunset, so chilly in fact that my finger tips were going cold!

Only caught around 15 moths in two traps.

Notables are always caught here, with Barred Chestnut, Angle-striped Sallow, Black Arches and Oak Lutestring trapped.
